Abstract

A method of producing a household sieve having a sieve mesh of metal wire and an injection-moulded plastics frame comprises providing a marginal region (5) of the mesh sieve (8) with a stepped construction having a short horizontal region (12) so that the two halves of the mould of an injection-moulding machine abut against one another perpendicularly over an area in this region, and substantially at right angles to the adjacent region (8) of the sieve within the marginal region. The invention prevents leakage of the injector plastics into the adjacent region (8), and this may be assisted either by cooling of the mould in the region (12), or by cooling the sieve mesh immediately prior to injection, by dipping it into refrigerant. The opposed halves of the injection mould, may also act as a deep drawing tool, for the shaping of the sieve mesh. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Method of producing a household sieve This invention relates to a method of producing a household sieve having a sieve mesh of metal wire which is secured to a closed plastics frame provided with a handle extension and to a household sieve produced by the method according to the invention.
In known sieves of this type, such as described in the German Patent Specification No. 1268337 for example, the plastics material runs into the mesh of the sieve during the injection-moulding operation. The result is a sieve with a poor optical ap pearance.
The present invention aims to provide a household sieve of the type above mentioned in which the plastics frame is separated from the mesh of the sieve by a sharp edge.
According to the invention, there is provided a method of producing a household sieve having a sieve mesh of metal wire which is secured to a closed plastics frame provided with a handle extension, wherein the sieve mesh is placed in a mould of an injection moulding machine for forming the frame, a marginal region of the mesh of the sieve being bent substantially at right angles, and wherein the mould halves for forming the frame are so constructed that, immediately behind the bend in the direction of said marginal region of the mesh of the sieve, the clamping force of the machine acts substantially at right angles on the marginal region of the mesh of the sieve and that said marginal region is positively clamped by the two mould halves over at least a short region of the mesh of the sieve. This method makes use of the knowledge that a bend substantially at right angles practically acts like a labyrinth seal and that as a result of the alignment of the clamping force vector of the tool perpendicular to the second half of the tool, the work is always carried out with an optimum width of gap. Wear phenomena in the tool are compensated.
Preferably, the mesh of the sieve and/or the mould halves is/are cooled, at least in the region of contact of the two halves of the tool, that is to say in the narrowest labyrinth region. As a result, a rapid setting of the plastics material is achieved with the result that the edge is particularly sharp.
Overflowing of the plastics material into the further mesh of the sieve is impossible as a result.
The invention also extends to a household sieve produced by the method above described in which the marginal region of the mesh of the sieve is of stepped construction and the plastics frame is disposed after the bend in the mesh of the sieve.
The household sieve produced by the method according to the invention satisfies completely the aesthetic sensibilities of the present-day housewife.
Ugly places with an unevenly smudgy appearance where the plastics material has overflowed are reliably avoided.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation of one embodiment of a household sieve produced by the method ac cording to the invention; Figure 2 is a diagrammatic section through the mould halves of an injection-moulding machine with the mesh of a sieve inserted; Figure 3 shows a detail of the mould halves shown in Figure 2 to an enlarged scale; and Figure 4 shows a detail, corresponding to Figure 3, but showing an alternative embodiment.
Referring to the drawings, the mesh 1 of a sleeve is injection-moulded into a plastics frame 2 which is provided, at the one side, with a handle extension 3 and, at the other side, with a supporting hook 4. The marginal region 5 of the mesh 1 of the sieve is of stepped construction, that is to say it first has a vertical portion 6, then a horizontal portion 7 and then changes over into the rounded portion 8.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 4, the vertical portion 6 is dispensed with.
This construction of the marginal region, naturally required by the tool construction, is the essential feature of the invention. The two halves 9 and 10 of the mould of an injection-moulding machine, the half 9 representing the force side and the half 10 the nozzle side, move relative to one another in the direction of the arrow 11. It must be mentioned that it does not really matter which half of the tool represents the force side and which the nozzle side. These are decisions made purely from the point of view of the tool which also depend on the nature of the injection device. Thus, either the mould half 9 or the mould half 10 or both may be movable.
The two halves g and 10 of the mould have a short region 12 which extends at right angles to the direction of the arrow 11. The portion 7 of the mesh of the sieve is thus clamped between the mould halves 9 and 10 over this region 12 as are- suit of which the portion 7 becomes practically horizontal. The region 12 is also at right angles to the direction of flow of the thermoplastic plastics material during its injection into the mould cavity 13 for the plastics frame 2 which is formed between the mould halves 9 and 10 when said mould halves are moved together. As a result, a labyrinth is formed for the plastics material. In addition, the capillaries between the wire mesh are so fine that the setting of the plastics material takes place very quickly in the short region 12 and a shart separation results between the rounded portioh 8 of the mesh of the sieve and the plastics frame 2. As a result of the fact that the two mould halves 9 and 10 push against one another over an area in the short region 12, tool wear is also compensated and only a labyrinth of the thickness of the wire remains. Thus no impairing of the quality of the injection moulding will occur through tool wear.
A further increase in the separating accuracy can be effected by appropriate cooling. One possibility is cooling the tool in the short region 12, another is cooling the mesh 1 of the sieve immediately before the injection-moulding operation, for example by dipping the mesh in a refrigerating agent.
A further refinement of the method according to the invention is achieved if the injection-moulding machine, that is to say the two halves 9 and 10 of the tool, act simultaneously as a deep-drawing tool for the mesh 1 of the sieve.
In any case, the starting point for the injectionmoulding of the plastics frame may appropriately be in the handle extension 3 or in the supporting hook 4.
