Abstract
A device suitable for shelving including upright posts (12) each having a series of indentations (11) engageable by projections on resilient fingers of sleeves (22) which are pressed together by sockets (17) on the corners of a shelf to engage the projections in the indentations. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Devices for mounting articles on bars
This invention relates to devices for mounting articles on bars, forexamplefor mounting shelves on tubular bars to form stacks of shelving.
The object of the invention is to provide simple and inexpensive devices whereby the shelves or other articles can be mounted on bars at any of a variety of possible positions. Thus for shelving the erector will have a choice of vertical heights at which the shelves can be mounted.
According to the invention a bar is provided with a series of indentations, an article is provided with a tapered socket slidable on the bar, and a sleeve is provided which has a portion formed of a plurality of fingers having at least one projection engageable in said indentations, said sleeve being slidable on the bar and engageable by said socket which presses the fingers to engage the projection in the selected indentation.
Thus the indentations may be circular and a shelf may be provided with a socket at each corner and the sleeve may consist of a base carrying resilient fingers each of which has such a projection so that each indentation is engaged by a plurality of projections.
The invention will be further described by way of example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings wherein:
FIGURE 1 shows the application of the invention to shelving;
FIGURE 2 is an "exploded" view of the means for connecting the shelves to the uprights; and
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view of one of the connecting means on an upright.
The shelving as shown in Figure 1 has shelves 10 which can be fixed in anyofthe positions shown at 11 on the tubular uprights 12. At these positions the uprights are indented to form recesses which may be grooves extending around the uprights.
The shelves are rectangular and made of channel sections 16 welded to tubular sockets 17 at the corners so that the sockets 17 can slide on the uprights 12. The sockets 17 are tapered.
Also slidable on the uprights are sleeves 20, one of each socket. The sleeve 20 consists of a circular base 21 carrying resilient fingers 22 i.e. this part of the sleeve is slit on several generatrices to form the fingers.
The sleeves 20 may be moulded in a synthetic plastics material.
The fingers 22 are formed with projections 24 shaped to engage in the recesses 11.
In order to fix a shelf at a required height, four sleeves20are placed at the appropriate positions with the projections 24 lightly engaged in the recesses 11.
The shelf is then pushed down to engage the tapered sockets 17 over the fingers 22 so as to press the fingers inwards and tightly engage the projections 24 in the recesses 11.
The shelf can easily be released by raising it if it is required to adjust it to a new position or to dismantle the shelving.
The invention avoids the use of nuts and bolts and provides connecting means which will not become permanently fixed by rusting.
1. A device for mounting articles on a bar comprising a series of indentations on the bar, an article provided with a tapered socket slidable on the bar, and a sleeve having a portion formed with a plurality of fingers, the fingers having at least one projection engageable in said indentation, said sleeve being slidable on the bar and engageable by said socket which presses the fingers to engage the projection in the selected indentation.
2. A device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the bars are tubes and the indentations are circular.
3. A device as claimed in claim 1 or 2 wherein the sleeve comprises a base carrying resilientfingers each of which has a projection to enter the indentations in the bar.
4. A device as claimed in claim 1 substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
5. A shelfdevice comprising four vertical bars each of which is provided with a series of indentations, a series of shelves each provided with a tapered socket at each corner, and a sleeve for each corner, the sleeve having a portion formed with a plurality of fingers, the fingers having at least one projection engageable in the indentations, said sleeves being slidable on the bars and engageable by the sockets which press the fingers to engage the projections in the selected indentations.
6. A shelf device as claimed in claim 5 wherein the indentations are circular and the fingers each have such a projection.
