Description

SPECIFICATION Flush mounting dwangs This invention relates to structural building components, and more particularly to those components sometimes referred to as "dwangs".
The term "dwang" apparently originated in Scotland in the mid-nineteenth century, being used to denote the "short pieces of timber employed in strutting a floor" (Shorter Oxford English Dictionary). It is known that these old wooden dwangs were affixed between adjacent floor joists to produce a lattice-like structure to which the floorboards could be nailed.
Since the structural building components according to the present invention serve a largely similar purpose, throughout this specification they will be termed "dwangs" also.
These inventive dwangs are suited particularly, but- not exclusively, to use with rolled steel joists (known as "RSJ's") in the construction of buildings such as those which incorporate two-part "snap-together" structural components being, for example, vertical studs; there again, these dwangs may also have application in the construction of ceilings as well as floors.
Therefore, in accordance with the present invention there is provided a dwang, being an elongated structural building component fabricated from a rigid material, a transverse crosssection of which has at least one limb element and at least one web element, said limb and web elements being disposed normal to each other; and one or more of said at least one limb and web elements having formed therein a recessed portion which extends over the length of the dwang.
Such a dwang may have a transverse crosssection which is L-shaped, the lower web element of the shape having the recessed portion formed therein, or it may have a transverse cross-section which is T-shaped, in which case the upper web element of the "T" has the recessed portion formed therein.
Alternatively, the dwang may have an Hshaped cross-section (that is to say, an "H" on its side:- "I") with the recessed portions formed in the two limb elements of the H.
There again, the dwang of the present invention may equally well have a U-shaped cross-section, the web element of this flatbottomed "U" being provided with the recessed portion; in another embodiment the "U" has two recessed portions, one in each limb.
The inventive dwangs are fabricated from a suitable rigid material such as a metal, extruded or otherwise, or plastic, or fibreglassreinforced resin or the like.
in order that the reader may gain a better understanding of the present invention, hereinafter will be described certain embodiments thereof, by way of example only, and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figures 1, 2 and 3 show, fragmentarily and isometrically, portions of dwangs of different transverse cross-sections; Figure 4 illustrates how a dwang according to the present invention may be employed in the construction of a ceiling; and Figure 5 similarly shows how such a dwang may be utilised in floor construction.
Upon referring to the drawings it will be seen that Fig. 1 represents a dwang the transverse cross-section of which is substantially H-shaped. The adjectival "H-shaped" is employed to be in accord with the way in which RSJ's of this cross-section are described in the construction industry, even though the "H" may be lying on its side. In this dwang, the web element 1 is planar, while each limb element 2 and 3 is provided with a recessed portion formed therein, referenced 4, 5 respectively.
Fig. 2 shows an inventive dwang of flatbottomed U-shaped transverse cross-section, the "U" being shown lying on its side here again. Web element 6 is the planar element in this embodiment, recessed portions 7 and 8 being formed respectively in the two limb elements 9, 10.
Fig. 3 represents a dwang the transverse cross-section of which is substantially Tshaped. The upper web element 11 of the T is formed with a recessed portion 1 2 therein, while limb element 1 3 is planar; needless to say, this dwang may also be used "upside down".
Fig. 4 illustrates how such a dwang is employed in the construction of a ceiling; excepting for the inventive dwang, which is shown in cross-hatched transverse cross-section, all other building components are shown only in outline, in the interests of clarity. The particular dwang shown is yet a further embodiment, being of flat-bottomed U-shaped cross-section but having its limbs 14 and 1 5 planar while its web 1 6 has formed therein a recessed portion 1 7. Such dwangs are particularly suited, but not exclusively so, for use in building constructions incorporating twopart, "snap-together" vertical studs, generally referenced 1 8. In such a structure, a roofframe may be bolted to studs 1 8 by bolts such as 19.
Fig. 5 illustrates how an inventive dwang, generally referenced 20, may be used in the construction of a floor, the particular dwang shown being of H-shaped transverse crosssection, as that already described with reference to Fig. 1. In this drawing, with the exception of the portrayed dwang, which is cross-hatched, all the other building components are shown only in outine, in the interests of clarity.
Here again, the structure incorporates two part, "snap-together" vertical studs, generally referenced 21. In such a building construction, the frame of the structure may be bolted down onto a cast concrete foundation or footing 22 by means of bolts 23, these bolts being partly embedded in the foundation or footing 22 during casting of the latter. The lower, embedded end of each bolt 23 is formed into a hook 24 adapted to engage with a cast-in-situ reinforcing rod 25.
While the above description is generally in terms of bolted-together structures employing two part or three part, "snap-together" components, it should be understood that dwangs made in accordance with the present invention are equally applicable to other, more conventional building constructions, wherever and whenever dwangs are required; moreover, the inventive dwangs may also take the place of purlins in roof-frame construction. There again, the four cross-sectional transverse shapes illustrated in the drawings should by no means be construed as being limiting; for example, dwangs having rectangular or shaped transverse cross-sections are also envisaged. A dwang- having a rectangular transverse cross-section will have recessed portions extending over the lengths of two opposed sides.
From the foregoing, the reader will readily appreciate that dwangs, being elongated structural building components made according to the present invention, will provide the public with a new or much-improved article of great use in the building industry or, at the very least, offer to it a useful and attractive choice.
