Abstract

The fan has a body (1), an electric motor (2), an impeller (3), and a threaded (as shown) or bayonet cap (4) carried by the body, so that the fan can be supported and electrically connected by screwing the cap (4) into a lamp-holder. The fan is suitable for use in small rooms, such as changing-rooms in clothing shops, offices, houses, caravans, and exhibition stands. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A portable fan for room ventilation This invention relates to a portable axial fan of the type comprising a motor, e.g., a four-pole A.C. motor, a fan impeller of axial-flow type having three or more blades and a body housing the motor, particularly but none exclusively used for the ventilation of rooms, particularly small rooms, such as those in clothing shops, offices, houses, caravans and exhibition stands.
The fans at present known, although widely used and even advantageous from some standpoints, however have some drawbacks that have not been overcome hitherto. Thus, in all of the types of fans at present used, there is a supporting base for the fan body, which is often cumbersome, and an electrical connecting cable and plug for the nearest power socket. As apparent, this construction requires the provision of these components with a high incidence on the cost of production of the fan and binds the user to arrange such a fan on a shelf or the like and then connect said fan to the electric power supply through antiaesthetic and expensive wirings.
When taking into account these considerations, it is usually decided not to install any fans in the small rooms of clothing shops intended for changing-rooms just where the provision thereof would be more useful.
It is the primary object of the present invention to provide for an effective noiseiess ventilation in these small rooms by a fan of very simple and reliable implementation.
According to the present invention, the primary object is achieved in that the body of the fan carries a threaded or bayonet cap for insertion in a commercially available lampholder, to provide both the support and the electric connection needed to be effective for room ventilation.
Thus, a fan according to the invention is of low cost and connectable to the mains without requiring any wiring because it can be applied at any available light location or source, and particularly it only suffices to unscrew the bulb from any existing lampholder and screw in a fan in replacement thereof to have an effective noiseiess ventilation. This allows the use thereof particularly in narrow spaces, such as shop changing-rooms, caravans and exhibition stands. The motor may be operable by alternating or direct current.
Further features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the description of a preferred, but not restrictive embodiment of a fan according to the invention, as hereinafter given with reference to the single figure of the accompanying drawing, showing a portable ventilating fan comprising a body 1, a motor 2, a fan impeller 3 and a threaded cap 4 for electrical and mechanical connection of the fan to a lampholder (not shown) coaxial with the motor and impeller.
Conveniently, the motor 2 is a four-pole asynchronous motor so as to provide the best r.p.m. for ventilation. Conveniently, the body 1 is made of self-extinguishing thermoplastic material to assure both highest guarantees of electric insulation, assembly rigidity and heat resistance. The fan impeller is of axial type, preferably with three blades, of soft thermoplastic material, and the cap 4 is made of brass with standard Edison screw thread (as shown) or bayonet joint.
Assembling of the whole unit may be carried out by conventional systems, such as screwing, rivetting or by glueing of the various component parts, or again by snap coupling of the various details. For particular applications it is possible without departing from the invention to provide the fan with an on-off switch enabling control thereof without any need of unscrewing the fan from a lampholder.
Additionally, a lamp could be provided in the fan body, so that the room can be simultaneously illuminated and ventilated.
The fan impeller could be also provided with a snap coupling for releasably securing it on the motor drive shaft, so that the fan can be made extremely compact for transport or storing.
1. A portable axial fan comprising a motor, a fan impeller of axial-flow type having three or more blades and a body housing the motor, the body also carrying a threaded or bayonet cap for insertion in a commercially available lamp-holder, to provide both the support and the electric connection needed to be effective for room ventilation.
2. A fan as in Claim 1, wherein the cap is coaxial with the motor and impeller.
3. A fan as in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the motor is operable by alternating or direct current.
4. A fan as in any one of the preceding Claims provided with an on-off switch enabling control thereof without any need of unscrewing the fan from the lampholder.
5. A fan as in any one of the preceding Claims provided with a lamp in the fan body.
6. A fan as in any one of the preceding Claims wherein the fan impeller has a snap coupling for releasably securing it on the motor drive shaft.
7. A portable axial fan substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
