Abstract

Makeup is applied to the human face to create fashion designs. A makeup stamp is used to apply cream makeup to form a thin-line stamped image. The lines of the stamped image are used as a guide to apply color makeup with a brush, i.e., the stamped design is filled in with the makeup. Then, glitter can be applied as desired atop the makeup. This can be done using a brush dipped in the glitter. A palette has makeup receptacles to hold the makeup and with which refillable inserts can be used. A glitter box disposed on the palette has several inner glitter receptacles to hold various colors of glitter. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Method of Applying Facial Makeup and Makeup Palette and Stamp Therefor This invention relates to a technique for applying cosmetic makeup to the skin of a person, and is particularly directed to a technique in which a special design is stamped about the eyes of a person, and then the design is filled in with makeup and/or glitter to create a personalized glamour look.
Heretofore, if a cosmetician wished to enhance a person's eyes by adding a special design near the corners of the eyes, the design had to be painted on or applied as a decalcomamia. In either case, painstaking care is required, and quite often the designs applied to the eyes were uneven. Previous stamp techniques for applying such designs involve application of a powder or dust makeup by use of a metal stamp. This powder makeup is rather impermanent and cannot be reliably applied where perspiration or other moisture may be present on the skin. Also, because powder makeup is not suited to printing of fine details, the stamps are limited to the simplest of designs, such as stars or valentines.
No one has previously proposed a kit or technique for applying cosmetic makeup to the face of a person in any of a vast number of arbitrary designs, and permitting the designs to be personalized by the application of colored makeup or glitter, which can be easily used outside the studio, and which is simple enough to be suitable for home or consumer use.
Accordingly, it is an object of this invention to provide a fashion makeup technique in which makeup is applied as a personalized design to the person's skin.
It is another object of this invention to provide a stamp for printing makeup as an outline design on the person's skin to serve as a guide for the brush application of colored makeup and glitter.
It is still another object of this invention to provide a makeup palette for use in applying cosmetic makeup according to this invention, including holders for brushes, containers for various shades of makeup, and a glitter box having a plurality of compartments, which preferably are removable glitter cartridges, for holding various colors of glitter.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a makeup palette as aforesaid having a mirror disposed thereon to facilitate application of the makeup on a person's own face.
According to one aspect of this invention, the technique of applying makeup to a person's skin comprises the steps of applying a cream base makeup, similar to theatrical makeup, to the design pattern of a design stamp, pressing the stamp against the person's skin to yield a printed design outline, and then applying makeup of one or more colors to the person's skin within the design outline using the latter as a guide. Following this, glitter can be applied atop the makeup. The makeup is preferably brushed in and the glitter can also be applied by brush, for example using artist's brush.
According to another aspect of this invention, a stamp and palette kit is provided for applying makeup.
The stamp has a back and a pattern formed of a plurality of sheets of rigid material affixed at one edge to the back, the other edge of which receives the makeup to be stamped onto the skin. The sheets are sufficiently wide to account for the "give" of a persons skin-that is, so that the back is held away from the skin when the makeup is being stamped on to prevent any makeup that has accumulated on the back of the stamp from being printed onto the skin.
Preferably the sheets and back are formed as a unit, for example, by molding out of styrene or other plastic resin material. The stamp can be of an open or a closed design, but in either case, there can be closed areas in the design (i.e., areas completely enclosed bythe design outline), which can be filled in with makeup and/or glitter.
The makeup palette is formed as a palette plate with a cutout to fit the thumb, a plurality of makeup holders in the palette plate, and a glitter box on the palette plate. The glitter box has a plurality of glitter compartments for storing glitter and a lid selectively movable between open and closed positions. The palette can favorably include holes in the palette plate such that the handle end of an artists brush can be removably inserted and frictionally held therein.
The above and many other objects, features, and advantages of this invention will be more fully appreciated from the ensuing detailed description of an illustrative embodiment, when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a makeup palette of this invention.
Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views along the lines 2-2 and 3-3, respectively, of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of a portion of the palette of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 shows a makeup stamp of this invention.
Fig. 5A shows the resulting stamped design achieved with the stamp of Fig. 5.
Figs. 6A through 6F are panels illustrating the steps of applying makeup according to this invention.
With reference to the drawings, and initially to Figs. 1 to 3, thereof, a makeup palette 10 of this invention is formed as a rigid, light-weight plastic palette plate having a thumbhole 12 disposed at the lower left of the palette.
A swing-up lid 14 at the top edge of the palette 10 can be lifted by finger action (Fig. 3) to reveal plurality of makeup refills 16 disposed therebeneath. Eight such refills 16 are included in this embodiment, although the number is arbitrary.
These refills 16 each contain makeup 18 of a particular respective color. When the same is exhausted, the refills 16 can be pushed out of snap-in seats in the palette 10 and replaced with fresh refills. The lid 14 can be opened with a finger of the same hand that is holding the palette 10.
A glitter box 20 or glitter compartment contains glitter of several different colors, and permits dispensing of the same for ease of application. The glitter box 20 has a cover 22 which slides downward (Fig. 3) by finger action to reveal six inner compartments 24, disposed in a single lateral row.
Each compartment 24 contains a different color of glitter 26. When application of the glitter is finished, the cover 22 can be pushed back to its closed position (as shown in Fig. to coverthe compartments 24. Because of the lateral arrangement of the glitter compartments 24, the downward and upward motion of the cover 22 crosses only the single row of compartments 24, and this arrangement prevents unwanted mixing of the glitter 26 into the various compartments when the cover 22 is moved. in a preferred arrangement, the compartments 24 are formed as a cartridge 24 which can be snap fit in place in the glitter box 20 and easily replaced when empty. This feature is indicated by ghost line in Fig. 3.
Artist's brushes 28 are provided for applying the makeup 18 and the glitter 26, and these are stored on the underside of the lid 14 in a holder 30. In this embodiment, the holder 30 stores three brushes 28.
When needed for use the brushes 28 can be frictionally held in corresponding openings 32 in the palette 10, with the handle end of the artist's brush 28 inserted in a respective opening 32 and frictionally supported therein (Fig. 4) when the brush 28 is not in use.
A stamp compartment 34 is disposed at the right side of the palette 10 between the makeup lid 14 and the glitter box 20. The stamp compartment 34 has a lid 36 which can slide to the right (Fig. 2) to open.
This lid 36 is constituted of a mirror and is angled forward somewhat to facilitate the user's applying .makeup to his or her face. Concealed beneath the mirrored lid 36 are a plurality of holders 38 each holding a makeup stamp 40. The stamps 40 can be of different arbitrary designs.
One example of a stamp 40 of this invention is shown in Fig. 5. This stamp 40 represents one of the several stamps that are provided in kit together with the palette 10, and which can each have a different, arbitrary design. Additionally, at least some of the stamps 40 can have a design that is a mirror image of the design of other stamps, so that symmetrical left and right designs can be applied to the face of a subject person.
The stamp 40 preferably is molded of styrene, with a support sheet or back 42 on which is disposed a pattern 44 formed of several thin, rigid upstanding members. A handle 46 is disposed on the side of the base 42 opposite the pattern 44. The stamp 40 is favorably molded as a unit. The cream-base makeup is applied to the top edge of the pattern 44, and then the pattern is applied to the skin of the subject to yield a resulting design 48 as shown in Fig. 5A. This particular design 48 is in the form of a sharp, thin-line outline with several closed areas 50, 52, and 54, and an open area 56. However, it is repeated here that the design is entirely arbitrary, and can for example be comprised entirely of closed areas or entirely of open areas, or of any combination of closed and open areas.
The plastic members of the design 44 should be sufficiently wide so that when the stamp is pressed against the subject's skin to apply the makeup, the back 42 is held clear of the skin by the members.
This prevents any makeup that has accumulated on the back 42 from contacting the skin and causing an unwanted blot or smear. In one practical example, the members forming the pattern 42 can be sheets (i.e. upstanding webs) approximately 5 mm, i.e., 3/16 inch, in width.
One favorable method of applying makeup using the palette 10 and stamp 40 of this invention is shown in the panels of Fig. 6A-Fig. 6F.
As shown in Fig. 6A, a cream base makeup is applied to the top ridges of the pattern 44 of the stamp 40. While a finger is used here to apply the makeup, the same could as easily be applied with the brush 28.
Next, as shown in Fig. 6B, the design is stamped onto the skin on the face of the subject. One side of the back 42 of the stamp 40 is aligned with the corner of the eye to ensure proper placement of the design 48. The stamp can be formed with a rectangular back, preferably having a mark or index on itto show the orientation of the design.
As a result, the stamped outline design 48 appears as shown in Fig. 6C.
Afterthe stamp design 48 is in place, makeup of various colors can be brushed into the areas 556 of the design, using the stamped outline 48 as a guide as shown in Fig. 6D. In this example, the various closed areas 50, 52, and 54 receive various different colors of makeup.
Then, as shown in Fig. 6E, the glitter is brushed on within the open area 56 of the design. Here, the glitter 26 is applied over a base of the makeup, which serves as an adhesive to hold the glitter in place.
After all of the foregoing steps are carried out, a finished design 58 results, as is shown in Fig. 6F.
While the makeup is shown enclosed in the design, it is also possible to continue the application of makeup out of an open end of the design. Also, the same makeup can be used on cheeks and lips, or elsewhere on the body where there is exposed skin.
The design 58 can either be applied to one eye anly or to both eyes, or another design, for example, a similar, mirror-image design can be applied near the subject's other eye.
The makeup designs can be of any arbitrary shape; the outline can have rounded or straight edges, or a combination thereof. Also, the design can be an overall closed design, or can be an open, V-shaped design. The designs can be fanciful, as is the design 58 in the above-described embodiment, or can be representative, such as illustrations of stars, butterflies, birds, or the like.
By employing the principles of this invention, makeup designs can be applied either in or out of a studio, and the makeup designs 58 can be easily applied even in crowded environments, such as parties or discotheques.
Although not shown, the palette plate 10 can include a small battery lamp to help illuminate a subject's face and to facilitate the application of the stamped and filled-in design.
The preferred cream base makeup used in this invention is of the type which is sufficiently permanent to last for an evening's entertainment, but which will wash away completely and cleanly with cold cream, and/or with soap and water.
While one particular embodiment of this invention has been described hereinabove with reference to the drawings, it should ba apparentthat many modifications and variations thereof exist and can be carried out by those of ordinary skill in the art without departing from the scope and spirit of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
