Description

SPECIFICATION Bookmark of multiple uses Books, diaries, and the like are sometimes provided, especially in the instance of de luxe editions, with a marker in the form of a narrow ribbon having one of its ends permanently attached to the book spine by either cementing or sewing.
Such a marker permits, anyhow, quick opening of a book, diary, and the like exactly at the pages wherebetween it has been previously placed. Where the book is not provided with several fixed markers of traditional design, paper strips or various objects must be inserted in between the pages to be marked, or the pages themselves folded over for marking.
This invention is instead directed to a bookmark of multiple uses comprising an element for detachable attachment to a book, and one or more thread-like or ribbonlike markers, having the same or different colors, each intended for insertion in between different pages of the book.
It is, therefore, an object of this invention to provide a detachable bookmark, and acordingly one which may be used with different books, for quick application to the spine, cover, or in between pages of any book, or even to the rings of books and copybooks of the movable sheet types, for simultaneously marking several pages, even along with fixed markers originally included with the books themselves.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bookmark of multiple uses, wherein the detachable securing element may carry inscriptions, e.g. of an advertizing character, or form a reference for notes and remarks relating, for example, to the pages marked by the different markers.
Further details on the invention may be gathered from the following description in conjunction with the accompanying illustrative drawing, where: Figure 1 shows a bookmark of multiple uses having a straddling securing element; Figure 2 shows a bookmark of multiple uses having a thread-like securing element, specially adapted for use with books of the spine whereof is formed by the cover; Figure 3 shows a bookmark of multiple uses having a card-like or cardboard securing element adapted for insertion in between pages; and Figure 4 illustrates an exemplary application of a bookmark to a book.
As outlined hereinabove, a bookmark according to the invention comprises a securing element 1 and one or more thread-like or ribbon-like markers 2, having either the same or different colors, which are attached to said element 1.
The securing element 1, for example, may include an elastic straddling element 3 as shown in Fig. 1, which has a gripping means 4 on at least one of its inside surfaces, or a straddling element or clip 5 formed from a suitably bent wire as shown in Fig. 2.
The bookmark as described above is used by applying it, through the securing element 1, to both the spine of a book as shown in Fig. 4 and to one of the cover flaps, at all times with ready separation and application to different books features. The ribbon-like markers 2 may be inserted in between different pages of a book to simultaneously mark several places in one and the same book which can be identified, where desired, by providing differently colored markers.
The securing element, where comprising an elastic straddling element 3, has the advantage of presenting a continuous front surface whereon inscriptions 6 of an advertizing or other character may be carried.
The securing element comprising a bent wire element 5 affords increasing transverse elasticity and is specially suitable for application to the spines of books and the like, since it does not impair or restrict the opening of the same where the spine is connected rigidly to the pages.
Either forms of the securing element 1 of the bookmark may be provided, however, with an extension in the form of a coupon or label for various inscriptions or references, and may also be secured to two opposed sides of the spine or cover through suitable means, not shown.
The securing element 1 may, however, comprise at least one card or cardboard piece 7-see Fig. 3-to one apex whereof markers 2 would be attached which have either the same or different colors. The card or cardboard piece 7 would be cut to an appropriate size and provided with a hook 7' for attachment to some parts of a book. Alternatively, the card or cardboard piece 7 forming the securing element could be merely inserted in between pages and held therein, or in between pages and a cover, such that the markers 2 may be used and inserted individually in between different pages.
The card or cardboard piece 7 may carry inscriptions or be utilized as an element with one or more sheets for writing in remarks or notes, and for this purpose it may advantageously include areas 8, each corresponding to one marker 2 and/or referred to the markers as by means of directions in the same colors as the several markers.
The thread-like or ribbon-like markers 2, moreover, may be connected to the securing element 1, irrespective of the form of the latter, so as to vary its working length by appropriately sliding the markers along and with respect to the element 1.
It should be noted, finally, that sliders 9 may be applied to one or some of the markers 2 which can be moved and positioned therealong and are intended to advantageously form line markers for marking specific passages and/or particular chapters within the same pages wherebetween the markers have been placed.
Thus, the bookmark according to the invention is simple and versatile in application and affords the advantage of being able to provide all books, even cheap paperbacks, with a useful bookmark, which on account of its detachable feature, and can be reused with several different books and thus constitutes a durable object not linked to the life span of a single book. The bookmark heretofore described may be variously modified in shape and construction without departing, from the scope of the inventive concept.
