Abstract
A process for, the blow moulding of plastics bottles from injection moulded parisons permits the moulded bottles to be released from the blowing mould (10) without the use of a split blowing mould by using a split neck mould (1) having a mouth moulding portion (3) and a shoulder moulding portion (4). When injection moulding the parson (22), Fig. 1, the neck mould (1) co-operates with an injection mould (5) which forms with the neck mould (1) a parison moulding cavity (8) consisting of the injection mould cavity and the mouth moulding portion (3) of the neck mould. When blow moulding a bottle (25) from the parson, Fig. 3, the neck mould (1) co-operates with a blowing mould (10) to form a bottle moulding cavity which consists of the blow mould cavity (12) and the shoulder moulding portion (4) of the neck mould. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Injection blow moulding of plastics bottles
THIS INVENTION relates to a moulding process and apparatus in which a plastics parison is injection moulded and then immediately blow moulded, with or without stretching, to form a bottle.
A A split blowing mould is usually employed in the blow moulding of plastics bottles, so that the moulding apparatus must be provided with a means of opening and closing the split blowing mould and requires additional space for the opened mould parts. Elimination of the opening and closing means and the additional space for the opened blowing mould parts would further simplify the mechanism of a moulding machine which consecutively carries out the blow moulding, with or without stretching, of injection moulded parisons into bottles, as disclosed in U.S. Patent No.
4,105.391.
A blow moulded bottle cannot be drawn out of the known blowing mould without splitting the mould because the shoulder part of the moulded bottle forms an obstacle to drawing the bottle out.
The present invention aims to eliminate the need for split blowing moulds in such moulding processes and apparatus and, in one aspect of the invention, provides a process for moulding plastics bottles, comprising: injection moulding a parison using a split neck mould and a one-piece injection mould which, when closed together, define a parison moulding cavity formed by the injection mould cavity and a mouth moulding portion of the neck mould; withdrawing the parison from the injection mould by separating the neck mould and the injection mould; blow moulding the parison to form a bottle using a one-piece blowing mould which, when closed by the neck mould, defines with the neck mould a blowing cavity formed by the blowing mould cavity and a shoulder moulding portion of the neck mould; and withdrawing the moulded bottle from the blowing mould by separating the neck mould and the blowing mould.
The invention also provides apparatus for moulding plastics bottles, comprising: a split neck mould having a mouth moulding portion and a shoulder moulding portion for moulding a mouth and shoulder of the bottle, respectively; a one-piece injection mould which, when closed by the neck mould, defines with the neck mould a parison moulding cavity formed by the injection mould cavity and the mouth moulding portion of the neck mould; and a one-piece blowing mould which, when closed by the neck mould, defines with the neck mould a blowing cavity formed by the blowing mould cavity and a shoulder moulding portion of the neck mould.
In one embodiment of the invention, a projection around the injection mould cavity is arranged to fit into the cavity of the shoulder moulding portion of the neck mould when the injection mould and the neck mould are closed together.
Conveniently, a recess around the blowing mould cavity is arranged to recieve the shoulder moulding portion of the neck mould when the blowing mould and the neck mould are closed together.
Desirably, an open end of the blowing mould cavity has the same diameter as an open end of the cavity of the shoulder moulding portion of the neck mould, the blowing mould cavity being straight sided or having a side wall slanting slightly outwardly towards the open end of the cavity.
A moulding process and apparatus embody- ing the invention may provide for mechanically stretching the parison during blow moulding of the parison.
The elimination of the need for splitting the blowing mould by the present invention simplified the moulding process and apparatus, thereby reducing the cost, and increasing the efficiency, of such process and apparatus.
In order that the invention may be readily understood, an embodiment thereof will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the moulds employed in a parison moulding operation of a moulding process embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the parison moulds when the parison is released;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view of the moulds employed in a bottle moulding operation of the moulding process embodying the invention; and
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view of the bottle moulds when the bottle is released.
As shown in the Figures, a split, or openable, neck mould 1 is used in a moulding process embodying the invention and comprises a pair of mould parts hingedly attached to the bottom surface of a shifting plate 2.
The neck mould 1 is provided with a mould portion 4 for moulding a bottle shoulder below a mould portion 3 for moulding a threaded bottle mouth, so as initially to form the bottle mouth during injection moulding of the parison and a shoulder adjoining the mouth ducting subsequently blowing of the bottle. A one-piece injection mould 5 (see
Figs. 1 and 2) for moulding parisons has an injection nozzle 7 at its bottom and is fixed on a mould closing plate 6. A projection around the periphery of the open end of the cavity of the injection mould 5 is arranged to fit into the cavity of the shoulder portion 4 of the neck mould 1 so as to form a parison moulding cavity 8 in combination with the mouth moulding portion 3 of the neck mould, as shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, a blowing mould 10, composed of a one-piece mould fixed to a mould closing table 11 which is vertically movable, has a mould cavity 12 for moulding the body of the bottle below the shoulder of the bottle. A recess 13 around periphery of the open end of the cavity 12 is arranged to receive the mould portion 4 of the neck mould 1, so that the cavity 12 of the mould 10 and the cavity of the mould portion 4 of the neck mould 1 together constitute a bottle moulding cavity as shown in Fig. 4. The open end of the cavity 12 has the same diameter as the open end of the cavity of the mould portion 4 and the cavity 12 also has a wall which is vertical, ie straight sided, or slants slightly outwardly towards the open end of the cavity to allow easy release of a moulded bottle.
The process of moulding a bottle using the described moulding apparatus will now be described.
The neck mould 1 and the injection mould 5 5 are brought together as shown in Fig. 1 in a mould closing operation by raising the plate 6, and a core 21 is inserted into the centre of the cavity 8 from above the shifting plate 2 through the neck mould 1. After mould closure, melted resin is injected through the injection nozzle 7 into the mould space, which extends from the bottom of the cavity to the top of the mould portion 3 of the neck mould 1, to mould a parison 22 having a neck and bottom.
After the injection moulding operation, the injection mould 5 is lowered with the mould closing plate 6 and the core 21 is retracted to a position above the shifting plate 2. The parison 22, being gripped by the neck mould 1, is released from the cavity of the injection mould 5 by the downward movement of the injection mould 5.
The neck mould 1, together with the parison 22, is next moved to a position over the blowing mould 10, and the blowing mould 10 is raised with the table II to join with the neck mould 1 in a mould closing operation.
The parison 22 is thereby positioned in the centre of the cavity 12 and the open end of the mould portion 4 is fitted into the recess 13 to form the cavity for blow moulding the bottle.
After the completion of the mould closing operation, a blowing tube 23 is inserted into the neck mould 1 and a stretching rod 24 is positioned in the parison 22 and extended down to the bottom of the cavity. In synchronism with this extension, air is blown into the parison so that the parison expands to form the bottle 25, as shown in Fig. 3.
After the blow moulding of the bottle 25, the table ll and the attached blowing mould 10 are lowered to open the mould. The moulding of the bottle 25 is carried out by the combination the mould portion 4 of neck mould 1 and the blowing mould 10, the moulded bottle being released from the cavity smoothly because the neck mould 1 and the bottle 25 gripped thereby separate from the blowing mould 10.
The moulded bottle 25 is shifted with the neck mould 1 to a discharge position, where the neck mould is split. or opened, to release the bottle from the neck mould 1.
Although the above described embodiment of the invention involves a blow moulding operation in which the parison is mechanically stretched during blowing, clearly the invention is applicable to processes in which the parison is blown without stretching.
