Abstract

Dust is removed from hot acid-reacting gas by passing the gas through a filter medium comprising glass fibres having a content of combined ZrO2, such as are sold for the reinforcement of alkaline-reacting cement matrices, e.g. set Portland cement.

Description

SPECIFICATION Method of filtering This invention relates to a method of filtering hot acid-reacting gases to free them from particulate matter (dust).
In the control of air pollution, it is common practice to filter out dust from gases before treating them to remove gaseous chemical pollutants. Where the pollutant is sulphur dioxide or other strongly acid-reacting substance such as nitrogen peroxide and the gas containing it is at a temperature above about 100 C, conventional filtration media are of limited value. E-glass fibre is one of the best materials available, but its acid-resistance is only moderate.
We have now found that glass fibres of the kind sold for use in cement reinforcement, which are made with a content of combined zirconia (ZrO2) to give them improved resistance to the strongly alkaline conditions (pH about 12) prevailing in a matrix of set Portland cement, have very good resistance to hot dust-containing acid reacting gases.
According to the invention, therefore, dust is removed from a hot acid-reacting gas by passing the gas through a filter medium comprising glass fibres having a content of combined ZrO2.
In general, such fibres are made from a composition whose predominant ingredients are SiO2, 55-75%; alkalis plus alkaline earth metal oxide, 10-25%; and ZrO2, 5-25% by weight.
One particularly suitable form of fibre is that commercially available under the registered trade mark Cem-FIL, whose composition in weight % is: SiO2 62 Na2O 14.8 CaO 5.6 ZrO2 16.7 A1203 0.8 TiO2 0.1 Fibres of this kind are described in British Patent specification 1290 528 (in which % compositions are given in molecular weight percentages, not as here in ordinary weight percentages); and the fibres described in that specification can in general be used in the method of the present invention. So also can those described in British patent specification 2 071 081.
A filtration device for use in the method of the invention suitably takes the form of a bag or envelope dust filter (see Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology, 3rd Edition, p.686 ff) in which the filter medium is glass fabric woven from ZrO2- containing glass fibre.
