Abstract

A mobile litter bin having a moulded plastics body (10) and wheels (18) mounted at the base thereof is formed with an integral peripheral outwardly extending flange (20) around its upper periphery for lifting and/or tipping the bin to discharge its contents, the flange being reinforced by a rectangular rigid L-section metal frame (23a, 23b) attached at spaced locations. The metal frame also serves as a hand hold when wheeling the bin. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to bins This invention relates to bins and is particularly concerned with refuse bins which are emptied by a lifting/tipping mechanism which engages the upper end of the bin.
The invention provides a bin comprising a plastics moulding having an integral peripheral outwardly extending flange at its upper periphery and a rigid metal frame extending around the periphery of the bin and secured to the integral peripheral flange to provide a lifting location for lifting and/or tipping the bin.
The following is a description of one embodiment of the invention, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation view of a bin; Figure 2 is a rear elevation view of the bin of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a scrap-section on the line A on Figure 1; Figure 4 is an under-plan of the pin; and Figures 5 and 6 are similar views to Figure 3 showing two modified construction.
The drawings show a plastics moulded bin indicated generally by the reference numeral 10 of rectangular form and having side walls 11, a front wall 12, a rear wall 13, a bottom wall 14 and an open top 15. Between the bottom 14 and rear wall 1 3 of the bin lugs 1 6 are formed in the moulding at spaced locations across the bin in which an axle 1 7 is mounted which carries wheels 1 8 at its ends to enable the bin to be wheeled from place to place. The side walls 11 of the bin adjacent the rear bottom corners are formed with shallow recesses 1 9 to accommodate the wheels so that the wheels lie substantially within the width of the bin. A foot 1 4a is mounted on the bottom wall of the bin to support the bin upright when static.
The top of the bin is formed with an integral outwardly extending flange 20 which is moulded into the shape of a shallow channel 21 having an upturned lip 22 at its outer end.
A rectangular form rigid metal frame of Lsection members encircles the bin and is mounted on the underside of the lip 20. The frame has a front member 23 extending across the front of the bin underneath the lip and having one limb 23a secured to the underside of the flange 20 by rivets 24 which extend through the limb 23a and flange 20 into the channel 21 where they receive washers 25 and are riveted over as indicated at 26. The limb 23b of each front member 23 extends across the front of the bin parallel to and spaced from the front wall 1 2 of the bin.
The ends of the member 24 are welded to the ends of side members 25 of the frame extending along the sides of the bin and riveted to the underside of the flange 20 by rivets 24 in a similar manner to the riveting of the front member 23 to the flange. The rearward ends of the side members 25 extend beyond the rear wall 1 3 of the bin and are welded to a further L-section member 26 which provides a hand-hold for tipping the bin rearwardly to lift the foot 1 4a on the base of the bin off the ground and allow the bin to be wheeled from location to location.
The frame 25 also provides a reinforcing lifting location for a lift tipping mechanism to engage under the frame and lift the bin for tipping into a refuse vehicle, container or the like.
It will be appreciated that many modifications may be made to the above described embodiment without departing from the scope of the invention. One such modification is illustrated in Figure 5 and like parts to those of the original embodiments have been allotted the same reference numerals. The upturned lip 22 at the outer edge of the flange 20 is omitted and the frame is mounted on the upper side of the flange 20. Figure 5 is a section through the front of the modified bin and, as shown, the horizontal limb 23a of the frame lies on the upper side of the flange 20 and the vertical limb 23b of the frame extends downwardly generally parallel to the front wall of the bin.A channel section subframe 30 extends around the underside of the flange 20 and the horizontal end 23a flange 20 and sub-frame 30 are secured together by rivets 24 the heads of which are counter-sunk into the surface of the horizontal limb 23a.
The lower ends of the rivets are formed over to fix the limb 23a, flange 20 and sub-frame 30 together and the walls of the sub-frame 30 are deep enough to protect the formed over ends of the rivets against damage by the lifting mechanism for the bin. The side members 25 of the frame are similarly secured to the flange 20 of the bin with sub-frame members 30 on the underside of the flange.
Figure 6 shows a further embodiment in which the channel section sub-frame is replaced with a L-section sub-frame 31. The arrangement is otherwise similar to that described with reference to Figure 5.
The sub-frame may comprise a complete frame encircling the peripheral flange or may consist of individual members extending along the underside of the flange. The arrangements of Figures 5 and 6 are otherwise generally similar to those of the first described embodiment.
