Abstract

A helical conveyor 2 introduces straw, forming a plug 13 at the delivery end, where a cutter 6 produces fluffy and comminuted straw 14. A duct 17 introduces gasification air (arrows L) from a blower 1 into the calcination and gasification zone Z. The gas produced (arrows G) is conveyed to a burner 11. A stone filter material 22 is kept in circulation by means of push bars 23 moving it upwards and a screw conveyor 24, which and are connected by means of free fall sections 25,26. In or on the stone material 22 the straw 14 encounters the gasification air (arrows L) giving rise to the formation of the calcination and gasification zone Z. The ash formed is blown off the stone material in the conveyor 24 by means of the gasification air and is accumulated at the upstream end (reckoned in the flow direction of the gasification air) of the zone Z, whence it is removed by the helical conveyor 9. Wood chips or coal dust can be similarly gasified. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for gasifying combustible material, e.g.
straw This invention relates to apparatus for the gasification of combustible material, especially straw. What is desired is apparatus which produces a gas free of tar and solid impurities, the gasification zone being continuously freed from ash.
The invention provides, in a preferred embodiment, apparatus for gasification and combustion of combustible material, especially straw, comprising a mechanism for introducing a combustible material, especially straw, a conduit for introducing gasification air, a stationary calcination and gasification zone carried by a travelling support, a conduit for conveying the gas produced to a burner, and an ash removing mechanism, in which the travelling sup portforthe calcination and gasification zone is a circulating self-cleaning and filter material, especially a stone filter material, which receives the straw and which constitutes a part of a transportation mechanism, the air conduit is devised for regulating the flow rate of the gasification air in such a way that it deposits the ash formed on top of the said material and in a location upstream of the calicination and gasification zone, reckoned in the flow direction of the gasification air, in which location the inlet of the ash removing mechanism is placed.
Preferably, the conveying means for the circulating filter material comprises a plurality of push bars sloping upwards in the flow dorection of the filter material, a first free fall section, a helical conveyor, an airlock for introducing gasification or other combustion supporter in counter-current to the filter material, and a second free-fall section.
It will be seen that the gasification product leaves the gasification zone substantially completely free from solid impurities which to their full extent are deposited in or on the filter material, and the filter material is cleaned by virtue of its particles rubbing against, e.g. polishing, each other and by virtue of the combustion supporter blowing the ash away.
The invention will described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, whose sole Figure illustrates an embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention.
The gasification and combustion apparatus illustrated in the drawing has a fan arrangement or blower 1 in which a suction fan sucks straw in granular form to a helical conveyor 2. The blower 1 communicates with a duct 17 via a regulation valve 8 for gasification air. Furthermore a secondary air duct 77 having a regulation valve 7 leads from the blower 1 to a burner 11 for gas produced in the apparatus.
The helical conveyor 2 for the straw carries at its downstream end (considered in the flow direction of the straw) a cutter 6 for producing a fluffy straw granulate 14 from a straw plug 13 formed between the helical conveyor 2 and the cutter 6. The apparatus includes a helical conveyor 9 for removing the ash 15 formed during gasification of the straw and intended to be received in an ash collecting container10.
The apparatus contains a circulating granular filter material 22 consisting of 3 to 8 mm refractory stones. This stone material 22 rests upon a plurality of parallel sloping conveying rails 23 which are reciprocated by means of a push mechanism (not shown) so as to convey the stones upwards.
The stone layer has a thickness of 3 to 4 cm, its width depending upon the capacity of the apparatus.
At the upper end of the rails 23 there is free fall section 25 which connects the path of motion of the material 22 to a helical conveyor 24. The latter has the form of a rotatory cylindrical tube to the inside wall of which is attached a screw conveyor having no solid center. The screw conveyor crosses the rails 23 and at its upper end there is an air lock 5 from which the gasification air arriving through the duct 17 is introduced and from which the material 22 is returned through a free fall section 26 to the lower end of the rails 23. In the airlock 5 are two gates which are opened alternately so as to permit the passage of the material 22 and so as to prevent the passage of the gasification air in the same direction.
For starting gasification in the apparatus there is an electrical heater 16.
In the drawing the following arrows are intended forthe illustration of movements: arrows L having one arrowhead: gasification air arrows G having two arrowheads: gas arrows H having three arrowheads: straw arrows S having four arrowheads: stone material.
The letter Z indicates approximately the situation of the calcination and gasification zone (compact bed) of the apparatus.
The apparatus functions in the following way.
Straw, which has been prepared and stored elsewhere, is sucked by means of the blower 1 to the helical conveyor 2 for straw, which at its delivery end produces a straw plug 13. The plug is fluffed and comminuted by means of the cutter 6, and the straw material, which at the start of gasification is brought into glowing condition by means of the electrical heater 16, is received on the circulating material 22 where it encounters the gasification air (the arrows L), which brings about a stationary calcination and gasification zone (Z). The gasification reaction may be controlled by means of the rate of introducing the straw and the gasification air and the rate ofthe movement of the material 22.
The gas produced (the arrows G) is conveyed to the burner 11 and is burned by means of secondary air arriving through the duct 77.
During its circulation in the system formed by the rails 23, the free fall section 25, the helical conveyor 24, the airlock 5, and the free fall section 26 of the stone material 22 will be freed from adhering ash because the stones are continuously polishing each other and air is passing over them. The gasification airwill accumulate the ash 15 upstream of the calcination and gasification zone (Z), reckoned in the flow direction of the gasification air. The helical conveyor 9 will carry the accumulated ash 15 out of the apparatus to the collectng container 10. The gasification air flowing through the duct 17 also has the effect cooling the stone material.
The gas produced is completely free from solid impurities and the stone material is constantly rid of particle-formed ash impurities.
The construction of the helical conveyor 24 with out any solid centre safegueards it against too heavy wear.
The apparatus described may be surrounded by the circulating water of a boiler plant.
Finally, it is remarked that the gasification and combustion apparatus according to the invention may also handle chaff, sawdust, shavings, and woodchips, and perhaps also coal granulate and coal dust.
