Abstract

This comprises a ground- engaging portion 1 and a box-like post-engaging portion 2 mounted coaxially therewith. Ground- engaging portion 1 is topped by a convex surface 4 and post-engaging portion 2 has a mating concave surface 5. The two portions are connected by bolt(s) 6, the bolt hole 7, 8 in at least one surface 1, 2 being larger than the diameter of bolt 6 to allow relative movement of the portions, such movement being prevented when bolt(s) 6 are tight. The axis of each bolt 6 is inclined to the vertical and access to the bolt-head or to nut(s) g by e.g. a spanner is through aperture(s) 10 in side wall(s) of box section 2. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Post support This invention relates to means for supporting vertical posts, for example, posts for supporting fencing or the like and/or sign boards.
UK Patent Specification No: 1461802 relates to a post support comprising an elongate ground engaging portion capable of being driven vertically into the ground and a vertical post engaging portion rigidly attached to the ground engaging portion and so formed that a post to be supported and engaged by, for example, attached to or received in, the post engaging portion extends vertically and with its axis substantially parallel to the axis of the ground engaging portion.
The ground engaging portion is driven into the ground, for example, using a sledge hammer and it is sometimes difficult to ensure that the ground engaging portion is driven absolutely vertically into the ground so that a post supported by the post engaging portion is not exactly vertical.
This invention provides a post support comprising a ground engaging portion capable of being driven into the ground and a box like post engaging portion mounted co-axially with the ground engaging portion wherein the ground engaging portion is topped by a convex curved surface and the post engaging portion has a mating concave curved surface and the ground engaging portion and the post engaging portion are connected together by at least one bolt passing through the two curved surfaces, the bolt hole in at least one of the surfaces being larger than the diameter of the bolt to allow relative movement of the ground engaging portion and the post engaging portion when the bolt or bolts is/are loose, such movement being prevented when the bolt or bolts is/are tight, the axis of the or each bolt being inclined to the vertical and access to the head(s) thereof or to nut(s) threaded thereon by a spanner or other tightening implement being available through a suitably located aperture or aperture in the one or more of the side walls of the box section.
Preferably the bolt or bolts are captive within the convex surface of the ground engaging portion and the concave surface on the post engaging portion has a slot aperture allowing sliding movement of the bolt within the slot. Access to the bolt or to a nut thereon for tightening and loosening the bolt or nut is achieved through an aperture in the appropriate side of the box section allowing passage of a box spanner or the like.
The invention will now be described in greater detail by way of example with the reference to the drawings in which Fig. 1 shows one form of post support according to the invention, Fig. 2 shows a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 shows part of the ground engaging portion, Fig. 4 shows part of the post engaging portion, and Fig. 5 shows the method of connecting together the ground engaging portion and the post engaging portion.
As shown in Fig. 1, the post support of the invention comprises a tapering ground engaging portion 1 of cruciform cross-section and a box-like post engaging portion 2.
The upper end 3 of the ground engaging portion has a hemispherical concave plate 4 welded thereon. The lower end of the post engaging portion 2 has a hemispherical plate 5 welded therein such that the two plates 4 and 5 mate with each other and provide a bearing surface allowing relative movement between the ground engaging portion 1 and the post engaging portion 2.
Captive bolts 6 pass through circular holes 7 on opposite sides of the plate 4 and through corresponding slots 8 in the plate 5.
A nut 9 threaded on each bolt 6 can be reached through appropriate apertures 10 on two sides of the post engaging portion 2.
In use, when the groung engaging portion has been driven into the ground to the full extent, the post is inserted in the box section of the post engaging portion 2 and the post engaging portion 2 is adjusted, with the bolts 6 slackened, until the post is vertical, and the nuts 9 are then tightened to lock the post engaging portion to the ground engaging portion and prevent further movement there between.
1. A post support comprising a ground engaging portion capable of being driven into the ground and a box like post engaging portion mounted co-axially with the ground engaging portion wherein the ground engaging portion is topped by a convex surface and the post engaging portion has a mating concave surface and the ground engaging portion and the post engaging portion are connected together by at least one bolt passing through the two surfaces, the bolt hole in at least one of the surfaces being larger than the diameter of the bolt to allow relative movement of the ground engaging portion and the post engaging portion when the bolt or bolts is/are loose, such movement being prevented when the bolt or bolts is/are tight, the axis of the or each bolt being inclined to the vertical and access to the head(s) thereof or to nut(s) threaded thereon by a spanner or other tightening implement being available through a suitably located aperture or aperture in one or more of the side walls of the box section.
2. A post support according to claim 1, wherein the concave surface on the post engaging portion has a slot aperture allowing sliding movement of the shank of the bolt slot aperture allowing sliding movement of the shank of the bolt in the slot.
