Description
SPECIFICATION
A distance piece for securing a glass pane, with the aid of a glazing strip, in a frame provided with grooves
This invention relates to a distance piece for securing a glass pane in a grooved frame, with the aid of a glazing strip.
Dutch patent application 74.00676 discloses a glass pane secured within a wooden window frame by dry glazing, whereby resilient profiled sealing strips are disposed along the inner and outer edges of the glass pane, the sealing strip disposed on the outside of the pane being retained by means of a glazing strip attached to the window frame and serving to absorb the retaining and closing force.
However, the glazing strip is so positioned that the retaining force transmitted thereto is only sufficient for retaining and, if necessary, for a moderate but not completely sealing, closure of the pane and a space is left between the window frame and the externally disposed glazing strip, which space is ventilated and facilitates the discharge of any water which might penetrate the seal. This method of attachment is identical for all four edges of the pane and in practice, as will be explained with respect to the sill side of the frame, is so effected that the glazing strip is not positioned in conventional manner, directly on the normally inclined face of the sill of the window frame but on distance pieces.The spaces behind and underneath the glazing strip
between the distance pieces communicates with the atmosphere and penetrant water may flow away
between the distance pieces through openings provided for the purpose.
In respect of the distance pieces it is observed in the above mentioned Dutch patent application 74.00676 that these need not comprise separate
parts but may be a continuous element, in which case, the ventilating and water-discharge openings
may be formed, for instance, by grooves in the
glazing strip.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a
universal distance piece that is applicable in glazing with glass of different thicknesses from a glass
approximately 3 mm thick to an insulating glass
having a thickness of 26 mm or more.
According to the invention, a distance piece of the
type described comprises a support member having
top and bottom faces and an end face for application
to the groove in the frame, said support member
being provided with a slot having one side parallel
with said end face and a flange along said one side, a
carrier block for the glazing strip, said carrier block
being recessed to receive said flange and be detach
ably connected to the support member, while the
support member is further provided with means for
adjusting the distance between the side of said slot
parallel to said end face and said end face itself.
Some embodiments of the invention will now be
described, by way of example, with reference to the
accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view from above of a
distance piece having a wedge-shaped support member for application to the sill side of a window frame, the adjusting means constituting slots along which the member can be fractured for adjusting the distance between the side of the slot parallel to the end face for application to the groove and said end face itself;
Figure 2 shows in cross-section the manner of sealing an insulating glass pane in a frame at the sill side thereof using the distance piece shown in
Figure 1;;
Figure 3 shows in cross-section the manner of sealing an insulating glass pane in a frame at the head or lintel and/or at the jambs thereof using a distance piece, the support member of which is designed with parallel top and bottom faces;
Figure 4 is a perspective view from above of a distance piece with a wedge-shaped support member for application to the sill side of a frame and having reversible means by which the adjustment of the distance between the side of the slot parallel to the end face and the end face itself may be effected;
Figure 5 is a detail view of a member forming part of the adjusting means shown in Figure 4; and
Figure 6 is a side view of the member shown in
Figure 5.
1 indicates a distance piece comprising a plastics carrier block 10 and a plastics support member 22, which latter is wedge-shaped and has a top face 2, a bottom face 3, parallel side faces 4 and 5 and parallel end faces 6 and 7. The end face 7, during positioning of the distance piece, is brought into abutment with the end face of a groove 24 in the sill of the frame. In the top face 2 two groups of fracture slots 8 and 9 are provided and in the bottom face 3 one group of fracture slots 9' are provided. The slots extend parallel to the end face 7 and the slots 9 in the upper face are arranged opposite the slots 9' in the lower face to facilitate a narrowing of the support member along a fracture slot. Naturally, after removal of a strip, the fractured face of the remaining part of the support member 22 constitutes the new end face 7 for abutment with the groove in the frame.In Figure 2 the removed part of the support member 22 is indicated by 21. When positioning the wedgeshaped support member on the inclined face of the sill 23 (Figure 2) the top face 2 of the support member is substantially horizontal and serves, with a supporting block 26, which may be made of synthetic rubber material e.g. neoprene, to support a glass pane 16.
The support member 22 may be secured to the sill by means of a screw passing through a threaded hole 12.
The support member 22 is further provided with slots 14 and 14' separated by a tongue 29, the width of each of the slots being step-wise increased towards the bottom with consequent formation of flanges 11.
In the drawing 10 indicates a carrier block associated with the distance piece for supporting a glazing strip 19. The carrier block 10 is recessed at 15 to enable it to be connected to the supporting member 22 through engagement with the flange 11 at a predetermined clamping stress. At the side destined to face towards the pane, the carrier block 10 is formed with a groove 13 into which a projection 13' on the glazing strip 19 may be snapped so that the glazing strip 19 is positively connected to the carrier block 10. The glazing strip 19 is conventionally provided with resilient sealing profile 20 of e.g.
plastics or rubber which is contiguous with the surface of the glass pane.
The dimensions of the supporting member 22 and consequently of the distaance piece in a direction parallel to the sill are relatively small.
Upon application in practice the following steps are taken. A profiled strip 18 is screwed onto the sill, after which a rubber sealing element 17 is disposed therein. Subsequently the supporting members of two outer distance pieces are screwed onto the sill at a given distance from each end of the sill, e.g. at distances approximately corresponding to W of the length of the groove, with the end faces 7 in abutment with the end face of the groove. Between the outer two supporting members, there may, if desired, be disposed more supporting members 22 in such a way that the centre-to-centre distance between the supporting members is approximately 25 - 30 cm. Subsequently, the supporting blocks 26 are placed on the supporting members and the pane 16 positioned thereon.After this, the carrier blocks 10 are connected to the supporting members 22 by means of the recesses 15 engaging over the flanges 11. Subsequently, the glazing strip 19, which is provided with the sealing element 20, is fitted over the carrier blocks 10 and coupled thereto by snapping of the projection 13' into the respective grooves 13. The sealing element 20 will thereby be pressed at a predetermined pressure against the pane. Underneath the glazing strip 19, as will be clear, there is formed a hollow space which, since the outside of the glazing strip is not contiguous with the sill on account of the sloping face 23 of the latter, communicates with the atmosphere and hence, serves for the discharge of water and for ventilating.
The distance piece shown in Figure 3 has a supporting member 25, the top and bottom faces of which are mutually parallel and is applied at the head or lintel or at the sides of the frame, with the result that the glazing strip on the outside is contiguous with the sill. The space between the glazing strip and the sill serves for the discharge of water but not for ventilating. Otherwise, the construction and application thereof is analogous to that of the distance piece shown in Figure 1.
The supporting member 22 shown in Figure 4 con- rises a separate arched member 31 constituting a distance adjusting element having legs 32 and 33 which are interconnected by means of a cross piece, the front 30 of which is parallel with the end face 7. The legs 32 and 33 are provided with pins 34 and 35 extending at right-angles to the surface thereof. The supporting member 22 is formed with recesses 37 and 38, each of which has rows of holes 38 arranged symmetrically relative to the centre and extending at right-angles to the end face 7.
The transverse dimensions of the recesses 36 and 37 are such that the arched member 31 with the legs 32 and 33 may be moved in a direction at rightangles to the end face 7 until the required position is reached and then fixed by introducing the pins 34 and 35 in corresponding holes in the rows of holes 38. In the distance piece shown in Figure 4 the front 30 of the arched member 31 may be considered to be a part of the end face 7 movable in the above indicated sense, so that the distance between the sides of the slots 14 and 14' parallel with the end face 7 and the end face of the groove in the frame may be selectively adjusted.
The distance pieces described above and shown in the drawings may be modified without departing from the scope of the following claims.
