Abstract
Panels are provided for the formation of walls especially for cold stores, each panel being a laminate of at least one layer of thermally insulating material and at least one layer of fire retardant material. The edges of the panels are rebated such that when two thereof are joined in abutting relationship there is an overlap of the fire retardant material at the joint and no gap for the passage of fire.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Fire retardant panelling
This invention relates to fire retardant panelling and more particularly such panelling which is also thermally insulating. Panelling of this kind has particular application in the construction of cold stores such as warehouses where food or other substances are required to be kept at reduced temperatures, and where it is desirable to prevent or delay passage of fire through the panelling. A particular problem arises in that many materials which have high thermal insulating properties are easily combustible.
It is known to provide panels which are formed from separate fire retardant and thermally insulating components, but these are normally assembled with butt joints leaving gaps between adjacent panels thus reducing the effective fire retardant properties.
It is an object of the present invention to provide fire retardant and thermally insulating panelling which overcomes this disadvantage.
According to the present invention there is provided a panel for use in forming the walls of a cold or chilled storage locality, the panel including at least one layer of each of a thermally insulating material and a fire retardant material, and in which at the edges of the panel which are to be joined to a similar panel a rebate is formed so that when two or more panels are joined together an overlap of the fire retardant material is provided at the joint.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description with reference to the single figure of the accompanying drawing which shows, by way of example only, a cross-section through a joint between two panels embodying the invention.
Referring now to the drawing it will be seen that the first panel has outer or facing skins 1 and 5which are separated by two layers of thermally insulating material 2 and 4, which sandwich between them a layer 3 of a fire rated board or other fire retardant material.
The second panel is of similar construction having facing skins 1 a and 5a and thermally insulating layers 2a and 4a sandwiching therebetween a fire retardant material 3a. The first panel is provided at the edge which joins the second panel with a rebate defining a right angular corner 11 and with a wooden batten 7 abutting the thermally insulating material 2.
The second panel is provided with a rebate forming a right angular corner 10 and with a wooden batten 6 abutting the thermally insulating material 2a.
Thus when the two panels are brought into abutting relationship, the rebates accommodate the corners of the opposite panel so that there is an overlap of the fire retardant materials 3 and 3a, and the two wooden battens 6 and 7 come into face contact when they may be secured together and cloaked by a cloaking strip 8 secured to the battens 6 and 7 by screws 12 or other convenient fixing means.
The thermally insulating materials 2, 4, 2a and 4a are of foamed polyurethane whilst the fire retardant materials 3 and 3a are of fire rated board incorporating asbestos or other similar fire retardant material.
One suitable board is Superlux ((Trade Mark) available from Cape Insulations Limited.
Whilst the thermally insulating materials 2, 4, 2a and 4a will each have thicknesses of 6 cm or thereabouts (other thicknesses are of course possible) it is preferred that the materials 2 and 4a are thinner than the materials 4 and 2a by the thickness of the materials 3 and 3a so that the panels abut with their faces flush with one another and with the fuli double thickness of fire retardant material at the joint.
The thermally insulating materials and fire retardant material will conveniently be glued together by appropriate adhesives, (desirably fire retardant adhesives) suitable for the materials involved.
It is thought that by the provision of the rebates at abutting ends of the panels, a useful contribution is made to the known art of thermally insulating and fire retardant panels since there is now formed in the joint between adjacent panels no gap through which fire may pass.
In a modification two layers of fire retardant material are provided in each panel thus providing four thicknesses of such at the joint between adjacent panels. Again, the dimensions of the thermally insulating materials is preferably chosen to ensure that the faces of the panels are flush at the joint.
1. A panel for use in forming the walls of a cold or chilled storage locality, the panel including at least one layer of each of a thermally insulating material and a fire retardant material, and in which at the edges of the panel which are to be joined to a similar panel a rebate is formed so that when two or more panels are joined together an overlap of the fire retardant material is provided at the joint.
2. A panel according to claim 1 wherein a single layer of fire retardant material is provided and which is sandwiched between two layers of thermally insulating material.
3. A panel according to claim 1 wherein two layers of fire retardant material are provided and which are sandwiched between two layers of thermally insulating material.
4. A panel according to either claim 2 or claim 3 wherein the thickness of one of the layers of thermally insulating material together with the thickness of the layer or layers of fire retardant materials equals the thickness of the remaining layer of thermally insulating material such that when two panels are joined together the faces thereof are flush.
5. A panel according to any preceding claim wherein a wooden batten is provided to line the exposed edge of one of the layers of thermally insulating material at each rebated edge of the panel, the arrangement being such that two such battens come together at each joint between adjacent panels.
6. A panel according to any preceding claim wherein the layers of thermally insulating material are of foamed polyurethane.
