Abstract

A device for cutting securing means eg. a seat belt, comprises a movable cutting member (c, d) a fixed member (b) co-operating with said movable cutting member, biassing means (h, hh) serving to bias the movable cutting member toward said fixed member, latching means (n, f, ff) for preventing movement of the cutting member toward the co-operating member, and releasing means (i) for unlatching the latching means whereby movement of the movable member is permitted. The device is useful for expediting the release of securing means such as seat belts in the event of an accident such as a crash. Other applications include releasing cargo fastenings and use with skis, sails and tow ropes. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Belts - remote guillotine release The object of this invention is to expedite when desired the release of belts binding used to attach persons cargo equipment to an object to restrict the movement of such persons cargo equipment and to provide by control at one or more distant points that such persons cargo equipment be made free of such restriction if desired in circumstances involved by crash collision fire Such provision is discribed as follows of an application in connection with passenger seat belts permitting that one or more wearers of seat belts within a saloon car may be simultaneously made free of restriction by the minimal effort necessary applied to an exposed cord which is directed immediately under a large area of the car roof. The device can be attached to or replace entirely the normal bracket which directs the seat belt over the wearers shoulder and is fixed to the door pillar or other convenient position. The replacement bracket described by fig. 1 showing a a u shaped with fixing point to door piller or body part the lower open ends are joined by a bridge b which is shaped to permit a seat belt to slide smoothly over or for one end of belt to be fixed thereto, m is a bridge joining the open ends above b between b and m two studs e ee guide block c which supports knifed to register with block b springs h hh surrounding parts of studs e ee are compressed by block c and retained in compressed condition by pawls fff which hinge on block c and assume contact with retention plate n.When pawls f ff are opened to be released from retention plate the pre-compressed springs h hh thrust down block c and the knife d severs any seat belt material below it and above b. Provision to operate guillotine can be applied by a pull exerted on any length of cord cable if one end is connected to and arranged to release pawls f ff by expanding and freeing from plate n.
CLAIMS made of this device incorporating remote control. : That it can be used on all conveyances on land water and air when restraint to belting or binding is applied to persons cargo equipment and release from restraint is preferred individually or collectively at remote points.
In some applications the release cord can be exposed over a wide area in the form of a circuit to permit one or more guillotines which may be interconnected to operate.
Release control and applied thrust to the guillitine blade can also be by electric hydralis compressed air.
The guillotine device in portable form can be applied to join and form continuity of belts binding or other means to restrain cargo equipment in transit for instance with or attached to an aeroplane and the release effected at one or many points. A built-in master control could be connected to many individual items.
A sensing mechanism which registered the severity of a crash collision could release belts binding of the device were connected.
The remote controlled guillotine device can be applied for use in static structures for example sec urity safeguards burgular alarms flood warnings.
Safety precautions such as release of skies sails tow ropes Identificating discs can be prominately displayed to show the proximity of the guillotine release for example on the exterior of the roof of a conveyane Superseded claims all.
New or amended claims: 1. A device for cutting securing means which comprises a movable cutting member, a fixed member co-operating with said movable cutting member, biassing means serving to bias the movable cutting membertoward said fixed member, latching means for preventing movement of the cutting member toward the co-operating member, and releasing means for unlatching the latching means whereby movement of the movable member is permitted.
2. A device as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the biassing means are spring means.
3. A device as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the movable cutting member is a block having a blade or blades set therein.
4. A device as claimed in Claim 3 wherein the co-operating surface of the fixed member is reciprocal to that of the or each blade.
5. A device as claimed in any of claims 1 to 4 wherein the latching means comprises two pawls, each of which is hinged to the other and each being pivotally attached to the movable cutting member, and a fixed plate over which each pawl latches.
6. A device as claimed in Claim 5 wherein the releasing means comprises a cord attached to the locus of mutual hinging of the two pawls.
7. A device for cutting securing means substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
8. A car containing seat belts, each being fitted with a cutting device as claimed in any preceding
claim.
