Abstract

203,675. Bates, J. F. Sept. 8, 1922, [Convention date]. Surface carburettors.-A carburettor for use in connection with internal-combustion engines comprises a fuel tank 9 provided with an air inlet pipe 1, passing through a cap 2 screwed upon a neck 15 of the tank 9, and having a float-operated telescopic extension 3, and an outlet pipe 17 leading to the engine. The outermost member 8 of the extension 3 is provided with an external float 10 and orifices 11 in its lower end, the float being guided by rods 12 attached to a perforated cover 13 of the tank 9 and passing through holes in said float. The air thus passes through a constant depth of liquid hydrocarbon. In a modification, the inlet pipe 1 extends to the bottom of the tank and the telescopic sections slide thereon, air passing through holes in said pipe to the bottom section. The tank 9 is preferably of circular form and provided with slightly sloping false bottoms 36 so as to leave a well 37 at the bottom of the tank into which the lower end of the member 8 depends in order that all the fuel may be used.
