Abstract
A device for mounting a wound- up web of material, such as paper, non-woven fabric, plastics or other sheeting, in the form of a roll, comprising a housing 20 for the roll with a slot (25) in its front wall, through which slot the free end of the roll can project and a cutter (26) in the form of a slide mounted on the housing, by means of a mounting rail 29 on the housing engaging in a recess (28) in the cutter (26), adjacent the slot therein for displacement along the housing parallel with the length of the slot. The cutter (26) includes a blade (27) to sever the web and pressure rollers (33) located on both sides of the blade (27) to press the web against the front wall of the housing. The front wall may have a groove 34 therein with a cross-section complementary to the profile of the blade (27). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Device for mounting a wound-up web of material in the form of a roll
The invention relates to a device for mounting a wound-up web of material in the form of a roll for example of paper, non-woven fabric, plastics or other sheeting.
Such devices have been previously proposed comprising a housing which is open at the rear, can accommodate the roll and has a withdrawal slot at the front, from which slot the free end of the wound-up web of paper, non-woven fabric or sheeting can project. A cutter in the form of a slide with a blade can be provided in the region of the withdrawal slot for displacement along the front of the housing parallel with the length of the slot, and can be used to sever a desired length from the web, after such a desired length of web has been pulled out of the housing.
In such devices a pressure means can be provided, covering the whole width of the web, to hold the web fast in order that the cutting operation can be effected. Such pressure means has to be operated with one hand while the cutter is operated with the other and it is therefore not usually possible to hold the length cut off.
According to the invention there is provided a device for mounting a wound-up web of material in the form of a roll, comprising a housing which can accommodate the roll and has a withdrawal slot at the front, from which slot the free end of the wound-up web can project, and a cutter in the form of a slide mounted on the housing, in the region of the slot, for displacement along the front of the housing parallel with the length of the slot, the cutter including a blade, to sever a desired length of the web pulled out of the housing, and pressure rollers on both sides of the blade to press the web against the housing.
The web which has to be cut through can therefore be secured by the pressure rollers, in the actual cutting area, to prevent the web from shifting. The pressure rollers can be provided on both sides of the blade with the blade supported between them.
The blade of the cutter may be in the form of a circular disc, and the pressure rollers may be seated on a spindle of the disc so that they cannot turn relative to it. The displacement of the cutter thus sets the pressure rollers in rotation, and the rotation is transmitted to the circular disc, to give a satisfactory severing action.
The pressure rollers may be formed by rubber
rings since rollers in the form of rubber rings can prevent any slipping.
The circular disc may comprise a steel disc sharpened at the periphery.
The circular blade may equally comprise a disc made of a plastics material, sharpened at the periphery and provided with severing teeth. The teeth dig into the material of the web and thus facilitate cutting.
The blade of the cutter may be a circular disc and the pressure rollers may be disposed in pairs, with one pair in front of and another pair behind the blade having regard to its direction of displacement. This arrangement of the rollers enlarges the area where pressure is applied and thus reduces the possibility of slipping.
The blade of the cu Iter may have a cutting spike and he mounted, as an oscillating blade with limited swinning movement, on a spindle which also mounts the pressure rollers. A blade of this kind can give a pulling cut both on the forward and return movement, thereby achieving a satisfactory cutting performance.
The oscillating blade may have an extension at a side remote from the cutting spike, the extension interacting with stops on the cutter to limit the swinging movement. In this way the blade can be held reliably in either of its coperating positions, the change of position taking place as the direction of movement of the cutter is reversed.
The displaceable cutter may be mounted for displacement along an L-shaped guide projecting from the front wall of the housing, and may be located to the side of the withdrawal slot in at least one of its end positions. This is a simple way of reliably mounting a cutter for displacement along the front of the housing. It allows the web of paper, non-woven fabric or sheeting to be withdrawn unobstructed, when the cutter is located in said one of its positions to the side of the withdrawal slot.
The free end of the web projecting from the withdrawal slot may be guided downwardly and pressed against the front wall of the housing by the pressure rollers, and the front wall of the housing may contain a groove, extending in the direction of displacement of the cutter, to receive the blade. The already available front wall of the housing is thus utilised in a simple manner as a cutting board for the cutter.
The cross-section of the groove, viewed in the direction of displacement of the cutter, is preferably complementary to the profile of the blade, so as to give a good severing action.
The blade and pressure rollers of the cutter may be pressed against the front wall ofthe housing by the action of a force accumulator. In this way the blade in particular can be held non-positively in the operative position, so that a good cutting effect is possible.
The blade and pressure rollers may be provided below a recess in the cutter to receive the L-shaped guide projecting from the front of the housing, and a
U-shaped yoke spring forming the force accumulator may be provided above the recess, a rounded top portion of the spring bearing against the front wall of the housing.
Two L-shaped brackets, for mounting a further roll, may be provided at the underside of the housing. It is desirable for this roll to be a perforated one, i.e. the web wound onto it is divided into predetermined lengths by transverse perforation, so that the predetermined lengths can easily be torn off.
The limbs of the two L-shaped brackets engaging the underside of the housing can be slid along dove-tail shaped guides on the housing and prevented from shifting by detents.
The limbs engaging the underside of the housing may have resilient tongues with detents arranged at the free ends of the tongues, the detents engaging in corresponding locking grooves in the housing.
The invention is diagrammatically illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device according to the invention for mounting two wound-up webs of material in the form of two rolls;

Referring to the drawings, the function of the device of Figures 1 and 2, is to mount two rolls of paper, non-woven fabric or sheeting. It comprises a housing 20 of a plastics material, which housing is open at the rear and which can be fixed to a vertical surface such as a wall in a manner not shown. The housing 20 has a intermediate wall 21 which divides it into two chambers 22, each chamber receiving a respective one of the rolls (not shown). The rolls can be inserted in the chambers through end apertures 23, which can be closed by covers. In a front wall 24 of the housing 20 a respective withdrawal slot 25 is provided for each chamber 22, the free end of the rolled web projecting from the slot 25.
In the region of each withdrawal slot 25 a respective cutter 26 is provided on the front wall 24 of the
housing 20 and is mounted for displacement parallel with the length of the associated slot 25. Each cutter 26 is in the form of a slide and has a blade 27, with which a desired length of web, can be severed from the roll after it has been pulled out of the housing 20.
The cutters 26 are shown in greater detail in
Figures 3 to 5. As will be seen particularly from
Figure 3, each cutter 26 contains a recess 28 to
receive an L-shaped projecting guide 29, which is
moulded integral with the front wall 24 of the
housing 20. The guide 29 has end stops (not shown) to limit the displacement of the cutter 26. It will be seen particularly from Figure 1 that the cutter 26 is
located to the side of the withdrawal slot when in its
extreme righthand end position, so that it does not
interfere with withdrawal of the web.
The cutter 26 shown in Figures 3 to 5 has a blade 27 in its lower region. The blade 27 is in the form of a circular disc 30 mounted by means of a spindle 31
rotatably in bearing recesses 32 in the cutter 26. The disc 30 is formed of steel and is sharpened at its periphery. Rubber rings 33 are located on the spindle 1 on either side of the disc 30 and rotate with the disc.
The end of the web projecting from the withdrawal slot 25 in the housing 20 can be drawn downwardly and, as will be seen particularly from Figure 2, on operation of the cutter 26 will be pressed against the front wall 24 of the housing 20 by the rubber rings 33 acting as pressure rollers. The front wall 24 of the housing 20 contains a groove 34, extending in the direction of displacement of the cutter 26, to receive the blade 27. The cross-section of the groove 34 matches the profile of the blade 27, so that the part of the blade 27 projecting from the rubber rings 33 engages positively in the groove 34.When the cutter 26 is put to its specified purpose, the pressure rollers formed by the rubber rings 33 are pressed against the front wall 24 of the housing 20, simultaneously with the cutting of the appropriate part of the web, and the web is thus kept taut over the groove 34, thereby facilitating cutting by the blade 27. The rubber rings 33 acting as pressure rollers roll along the front 24 of the housing 20 and simultaneously turn the blade 27, so that cutting is easy.
The blade 27 of the cutter 26 and the pressure rollers formed by rubber rings 33 are pressed against the front 24 of the housing 20 by the action of a force accumulator 35. The blade 27 and pressure rollers 33 are provided below the recess 28 to receive the L-shaped projecting guide 29 on the front wall 24 of the housing 20. A U-shaped yoke spring is provided above the recess 28 as the force accumulator 35, with its rounded top portion 36 bearing against the front wall 24 of the housing 20. Limbs 37 of the U-shaped yoke spring are inserted in recesses 38 in the rear of the cutter 26. The spring automatically produces the necessary applying pressure for the rollers 33.The L-shaped projecting guide 29 with the associated recess 28 in the cutter 26 could if desired by constructed and arranged so that the part of the cutter 26 comprising the blade 27 and pressure rollers 33 were not pressed positively against the front wall 24 of the housing 20.
In Figures 6 and 7 a further embodiment of the blade 27 is shown on a larger scale. The blade 27 is similarly a circular one and comprises a disc of a plastics material, sharpened at its periphery and provided with severing teeth 39. Easy cutting can be obtained by the provision of the teeth 39. Pressure rollers 33 are provided adjacent the severing teeth 39.
A further embodiment of the blade 27, again on an enlarged scale, is illustrated in Figures 8 and 9. The blade 27 has a cutting spike 40 and is in the form of an oscillating blade, being mounted for limited swinging movement on the spindle 31 which also mounts the above described pressure rollers 33. The oscillating blade 27 has an extension 41 at the side remote from the cutting spike 40, the extension interacting with stops (not shown) on the cutter 26 to restrict the swinging movement. When the cutter 26 is displaced in the specified manner the cutting spike 40 trails rearwardly so that cutting takes place with a pulling action.
A further embodiment of the cutter 26 is illustrated in Figures 10 and 11. Here the pressure rollers formed by the rubber rings 33 are arranged in pairs, in front of and behind the blade 27 having regard to its direction of displacement. This enlarges the pressure area, and the actual cutting process takes place in the central part of that area.
Two L-shaped brackets 43 to receive a further roll (not shown) are provided at the underside 42 of the housing 20. The roll to be mounted here is transversely perforated at intervals along its length to subdivide it into sections, which sections can be torn-off and removed without a special cutter. The limbs 44 of the two L-shaped brackets 43 engaging the underside 42 of the housing 20 are displaceable along dove-tail shaped guides 45 on the housing 20, so that the brackets 43 can be spaced apart a distance to suit the width of the roll. Once the position has been adjusted the L-shaped brackets 43 can be secured against displacement by catches. For this purpose the limbs 44 engaging the underside 42 of the housing 20 have resilienttongues 46 with detents 47 located at their free ends and engaging in corresponding locking grooves 48 in the housing 20.
Extensions 49 are provided at the free ends of the tongues 46 to enable the tongues 46 to be bent away from the grooves 48 to disengage the detents 47 from the grooves 48.
Claims (17)
1. A device for mounting a wound-up web of material in the form of a roll, comprising a housing which can accommodate the roll and has a withdrawal slot at the front, from which slot the free end of the wound-up web can project, and a cutter in the form of a slide mounted on the housing, in the region of the slot, for displacement along the front of the housing parallel with the length of the slot, the cutter including a blade, to sever a desired length of the web pulled out of the housing, and pressure rollers on both sides of the blade to press the web against the housing.
2. A device according to claim 1, in which the blade of the cutter is in the form of a circular disc, and the pressure rollers are seated on a spindle of the disc so that they cannot turn relative to it.
3. A device according to claim 1 or claim 2, in which the pressure rollers are formed by rubber rings.
4. A device according to any one of claims 1 to 3, in which the circular blade comprises a steel disc which is sharpened at its periphery.
5. A device according to any one of claims 1 to 3, in which the circular blade comprises a disc made of a plastics material, sharpened at its periphery and provided with severing teeth.
6. A device according to claim 1, in which the blade of the cutter is in the form of a circular disc and the pressure rollers are disposed in pairs, with one pair in front of and another pair behind the blade having regard to its direction of displacement.
7. A device according to claim 1, in which the blade of the cutter has a cutting spike and is mounted, as an oscillating blade with limited swinging movement, on a spindle which also mounts the pressure rollers.
8. A device according to claim 7, in which the oscillating blade has an extension at a side remote from the cutting spike, the extension interacting with stops on the cutter to limit the swinging movement.
9. A device according to any one of claims 1 to 8, in which the displaceable cutter is mounted for displacement along an L-shaped guide projecting from the front wall of the housing, and is located to one side of the withdrawal slot in at least one of its end positions.
10. A device according to any one of claims 1 to 9, in which the free end of the web projecting from the withdrawal slot in the housing is guided downwardly and pressed against the front wall of the housing by the pressure rollers and the front wall of the housing contains a groove extending in the direction of displacement of the cutter to receive the blade.
11. A device according to claim 10, in which the cross-section of the groove, viewed in the direction of displacement of the cutter, is complementary to the profile of the blade.
12. A device according to any one of claims 1 to 11, in which the blade and pressure rollers of the cutter are pressed against the front wall of the housing by the action of a force accumulator.
13. A device according to claim 12 when appendank to claim 9, in which the blade and pressure rollers are provided below a recess in the cutter to receive the L-shaped guide projecting from the front wall of the housing, and a U-shaped yoke spring forming the force accumulator is provided above the recess, a rounded top portion of the spring bearing against the front wall of the housing.
14. A device according to any one of claims 1 to 13, including two L-shaped brackets, for mounting a further roll, provided at the underside of the housing.
15. A device according to claim 14, in which the limbs of the two L-shaped brackets engaging the underside of the housing can be slid along dove-tail shaped guides on the housing and secured in desired positions by detents.
16. A device according to claim 15, in which the limbs engaging the underside of the housing have resilient tongues with the detents disposed at the free ends of the tongues, the detents engaging in cooperating iocking grooves in the housing.
17. A device for mounting a wound-up web of material in the form of a roll, substantially as hereinbefore described and illustrated with reference to Figures 1 to 5, Figures 1,2,6 and 7, Figures 1, 2,8and9orFiguresl,2, 10 and 11 ofthe accompanying drawings.
