Description
SPECIFICATION
Smoker's pipe
This invention relates to smoker's pipes.
As is known, a smoker's pipe comprises a bowl portion and a stem portion. The bowl portion defines a combustion chamber for tobacco stuffed into it and a suction conduit leads from the base of the combustion chamber through the stem portion so that, when a smoker draws tobacco smoke from the combustion chamber through the suction conduit, he will cause the tobacco in the chamber to burn from the upper end of the chamber towards the base by the effect of the airflow through the suction conduit. Also, liquid emanating either from condensation of the smoke at the base of the combustion chamber or from saliva flowing along the conduit from the mouth of the smoker will progressively humidify the portion of the tobacco at the base of the combustion chamber, thus making combustion of this portion of the tobacco incomplete or more difficult as smoking progresses.
This makes the tobacco smoke progressively more acrid.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved smoker's pipe whereby this disadvantage can be overcome by avoiding hmidification of the tobacco in the bowl of the pipe, thereby ensuring total combustion of the tobacco.
According to the invention there is provided a smoker's pipe comprising a bowl portion and a stem portion, the bowl portion having a wall defining a vertically extending combustion chamber with an open end at the base of the chamber, a wall delimiting an upper end of the chamber opposite the base thereof, a cover removably mounted in the open end, the cover delimiting the base of the chamber when mounted in the open chamber end and permitting tobacco to be stuffed into the combustion chamber when removed from the open chamber end, a vent at the base of the chamber in communication with the surrounding air to permit entry of air into the chamber, and a suction conduit passing through the stem and bowl portions, the suction conduit having a first section leading through the stem portion, an intermediate section positioned lower than the upper end of the combustion chamber and an ascending section leading through the wall of the bowl portion from the intermediate conduit section into communication with the upper end of the combustion chamber whereby a smoker drawing tobacco smoke from the combustion chamber through the suction conduit will cause the tobacco in the chamber to burn from the base towards the upper end of the chamber and counterflow of any liquid from the stem portion towards the combustion chamber is avoided by the ascending conduit section.
Embodiments of the invention are described below by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 illustrates a first form of pipe embodying this invention, partially in longitudinal section;
Figure 2 is a view in transverse section through the bowl portion of the pipe of Fig. 1, along line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Figure 3 is a view. in longitudinal section of a second form of pipe embodying the invention; and
Figure 4 is a partial, partly sectional view, of a modified form of the pipe of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings and firstly to
Figs. 1 and 2, there is shown a pipe of generally conventional shape and including bowl portion 1 and stem portion 15, the stem portion including a detachable mouth piece and a part integral with the bowl portion, as is also conventional in smoker's pipes.
The illustrated bowl portion 1 has a wall 20 defining a vertically extending combustion chamber 2 with an open end 4 at a base 3 of the chamber and a wall 11 delimiting an upper end of chamber 2 opposite the base thereof. A lower cover 5 is removably mounted in the open end 4. In this embodiment, the cover 5 is hinged at 7 to the bowl portion 1 to enable the cover to be removed from the open end 4 of the combustion chamber 2, as shown in phantom lines in Fig. 1.
The cover has an inwardly projecting plug portion 8 which is a disc of incombustible material the upper surface 9 of which constitutes the bottom of the combustion chamber when the cover is mounted in open end 4 thereof. When the cover 5 is removed from the open end of the combustion chamber by pivoting the cover around hinge 7, the combustion chamber is accessible from the outside so that tobacco T may be stuffed into the chamber 2 against upper wall 11. When the cover is closed, disc 8 will plug the open combustion chamber end, the circumference of the disc frictionally engaging wall 20 around the open end 4.
In the illustrated embodiment, the upper wall 11 of the combustion chamber is constituted by a perforate plate, any plate permeable to tobacco smoke, such as a porous disc, being useful for this purpose. The bowl portion defines a further chamber 1 2 separated from the combustion chamber 2 by the plate 11 and receiving tobacco smoke therefrom through the permeable plate.As shown, the plate 11 is removably mounted in a seat 1 4 defined in the upper end of the wall 20 of the bowl and is held in position by a further cover 1 3 removably mounted on the wall above the permeable plate, the cover 1 3 defining said further chamber 1 2. The cover 1 3 is shown threadedly engaging the bowl portion wall so that it may be readily unscrewed for removal of the perforate plate 11, permitting its cleaning or replacement. Such a permeable plate constitutes a smoke filter.
At the base 3 of chamber 2, providing communication between the base of chamber 2 and the surrounding air to permit entry of air into the chamber, there is provided venting means 1 9 comprising a series of radially extending bores in the wall 20 (Fig. 2) distributed around the circumference of the combustion chamber. These bores allow chamber 2 to operate like a chimney for full combustion of the tobacco therein. For ready ignition hinged cover 5 can be opened temporarily.
The suction conduit passing through stem portion 1 5 and bowl portion 1 has first section 1 6 leading through the mouth piece of the stem portion, an intermediate section 1 7 positioned lower than the upper end of combustion chamber 2 and an ascending section
18 leading through the wall 20 of bowl portion 1 from the intermediate section 1 7 into communication with the upper end of the combustion chamber. In the illustrated embodiment, the intermediate suction conduit section 1 7 is positioned adjacent combustion chamber 2 substantially at the level of the base 3 thereof. The ascending suction conduit section 1 8 leads to chamber 1 2 which is in communication with chamber 2 through the plate 11.
When such a pipe is smoked, the smoker will draw the tobacco smoke from the base of the combustion chamber upwardly through permeable plate 11 and through section conduit 18, 17, 1 6 into the mouth. Thus, tobacco T in chamber 2 will be burned from the bottom towards the top. No saliva can flow into the combustion chamber through ascending suction conduit section 1 8 and since the base of the combustion chamber is the hottest part thereof, no smoke condensation will take place there, thus avoiding any humidification of the tobacco T. The upper chamber 1 2 will also be free of any condensation. Experience has shown that the quality of the smoke remains unchanged from the beginning to the end of the burning of a charge of tobacco in the pipe.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the venting means comprises a series of bores 35 in the wall of the bowl portion, which bores ascend from the bottom 37 of the combustion chamber 2 to the exterior of the bowl. The lower ends 36 of bores 35 are spaced from the bottom 37 by a distance h so that any tobacco particles or ashes settling at the bottom of the combustion chamber are prevented from falling out of the pipe through the ascending vent holes 35.
The embodiment of Fig. 3 is a pipe of which the bowl portions 21 and stem portion 29 are integral with each other. As in the first described embodiment, the bowl portion has a wall defining a combustion chamber 22 with an open end 24 at a base 25 of the chamber and a wall 23 delimiting an upper end of the chamber. A cover 26 for said open end 24 is a plug removably mounted in said open end 24, the plug having an annular plug portion frictionally engaging the wall of the bowl portion 21 at the open end and defining a cavity 27 constituting the lower part of the combustion chamber. On removal of the cover 26, tobacco T may be stuffed into the combustion chamber 22 against the upper wall 23. Venting means at the base 25 of the combustion chamber is constituted by a series of radial bores 28 in the annular plug portion of cover 26, these bores being in registry with like bores in the wall of the bowl portion. The cover defines a central recess or sump 38 for collecting particles or ashes falling through the combustion chamber.
The suction conduit in the embodiment of
Fig. 3 is functionally equivalent to the suction conduit of the embodiment of Fig. 1, and has a first section 30, an intermediate section 31 and an ascending section 32 leading directly to the upper end of the combustion chamber.
The pipe of Fig. 3 functions in the same manner as that of Fig. 1.
