Abstract
203,553. Wellman Smith Owen Engineering Corporation, Ltd., and Kemp, A. V. Oct. 6, 1922. Gaseous-fuel furnaces.-In a reversible regenerative open-hearth furnace, two removable ported structures are arranged at each end of the furnace, as shown at A, B, A<2>, B<2>, Figs. 1 and 2, the structures A, A<2> being used alternately to supply air and gas from the regenerators to opposite ends of the furnace, while the structures B, B<2> are used alternately for leading the combustion products from the furnace to the regenerator. With the ported structures arranged as shown, air and gas is supplied to the furnace through the structure A while combustion products escape through the structure B<2>. Each pair of structures is mounted on a carriage adapted to run on rails d on a frame D pivoted at one end. A hydraulic plunger is provided for lifting the frame D and the carriage with the ported structures so that the latter are clear of the seals g<2> before they are moved to bring one or the other opposite to the furnace opening. The ported structures may be mounted on overhead runways or may be arranged on rotary carriages. Specification 120,559 is referred to.
