Abstract

A blank 1 for making a pad for use in packaging, comprising a sheet of cardboard, corrugated board or similar lightweight foldable sheet material, formed into a main panel (2) which is to constitute One thickness of the pad, and at least two flaps (3, 4) hingedly connected to said main panel and foldable on to one face of said main panel so as together to form a second thickness of the pad, the said flaps being formed (7, 8) for interlocking engagement with one another when so folded. Further flaps on the remaining edges of the main panel (2) may be folded to form a third thickness. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Packaging This invention relates to packaging. It is known to make a thick pad for use in packaging by glueing together two sheets of double thickness corrugated board face-to-face. This is inconvenient and timeconsuming because spots of glue have to be applied and the edges of the two sheets have to be carefully aligned with one another Viewed from one aspect the present invention provides a blank for making a pad for use in packaging, comprising a sheet of cardboard, corrugated board or similar lightweight foldable sheet material, formed into a main panel which is to constitute one thickness of the pad, and at least two flaps hingedly connected to said main panel and foldable on to one face of said main panel so as together to form a second thickness of the pad, the said flaps being formed for interlocking engagement with one another when so folded.
Athick pad may be formed from such a blank simply by folding the two flaps onto the main panel and interlocking them together, without any glueing and without any problems of alignment.
Any convenient number of said flaps may be provided to form the second thickness of the pad.
However in a simple and convenient form of the invention only two such flaps are provided, which are preferably arranged opposite one another across the main panel, e.g. on opposite sides of a rectangular panel, but could readily be arranged adjacent one another if desired, e.g. on adjacent sides of a rectangular panel.
If the blank only has flaps for folding on to one face of the main panel, then of course only a double thickness pad will be formed. In one form of the invention, however, at least two further flaps are hingedly connected to the main panel and are foldable on to the other face thereof so as together to form a third thickness of the pad, the said further flaps being likewise formed for interlocking interengagement when so folded. Here again of course more than two such further flaps could be provided to make up the third thickness and they may be connected to the main panel in various relative positions. In one simple and convenient embodiment a rectangular main panel has a flap hingedly connected to each of its four edges, one mutually opposite pair of flaps being foldable on to one face of the panel and the other pair onto the other face.
Usually the said flaps when folded to form the second or third thickness of the pad will cover the whole of the relevant face of the main panel so that the pad is of double or tripple thickness over its whole area, but this is not essential and embodiments may be envisaged where, by suitable arrangement of the various flaps, the pad is of different thicknesses in different areas.
The flaps may be arranged to interlock in any convenient manner. In a presently preferred embodiment each pair of flaps which interlock are provided with an integral dovetail-shaped tab and a complementary dovetail-shaped recess respectively.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is a plan view of two similar blanks according to the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the two blanks 1 are identical and are shown together because they can conveniently be cut from a single rectangular piece of sheet material, which in this embodiment is double-faced double-thickness corrugated board.
The blank 1 comprises a rectangular main panel 2 and two flaps 3 and 4 hingedly connected to two opposite sides of the main panel at 5 and 6, the hinges comprising cuts extending through the whole thickness of the board except for one facing sheet so that the flaps can be folded through 1800 on to one face of the main panel. The flap 3 is formed with a dovetail-shaped tab 7 and the flap 4 with a dovetailshaped recess 8, which interlock to hold the flaps in their folded over positions in which they form a second thickness of a rectangular pad of the shape of the main panel 2, which panel of course formes one thickness thereof. A second dovetail recess 9, which is not used, is formed in the flap 3 by the formation of the tab on the other blank.
In its illustrated form the invention provides a thick resilient pad which is particularly suitable for use as an end pad at each end of an elongate container for a stack of fluorescent tubes, to protect the terminals at the ends of the tubes during transportation and storage.
1. A blank for making a pad for use in packaging, comprising a sheet of cardboard, corrugated board or similar lightweight foldable sheet material, formed into a main panel which is to constitute one thickness of the pad, and at least two flaps hingedly connected to said main panel and foldable on to one face of said main panel so as together to form a second thickness of the pad, the said flaps being formed for interlocking engagement with one another when so folded.
2. A blank as claimed in claim 1, wherein only two of said flaps are foldable on to said one face of the main panel.
3. A blank as claimed in claim 2, wherein said two flaps are hingedly connected to one pair of opposite edges of a rectangular main panel.
4. A blank as claimed in any of claims 1 to 3, having at least two further flaps hingedly connected to said main panel and foldable on to the other face thereof to form a third thickness of the pad.
5. A blank as claimed in claims 3 and 4, wherein only two of said further flaps are provided, being hingedly connected to the other pair of opposite edges of the main panel.
6. A blank as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the or each pair of interlockable flaps covers the whole of the relevant face of the main panel when folded thereonto.
7. A blank as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the or each pair of interlockable flaps are formed respectively with a tab and a complementary recess for interlocking.
