Abstract

A clothes line comprises a rope and clothes pegs each integrally formed with a resilient attachment to the rope. The clothes pegs are individually movable from a position adjacent to the rope, in which the attachment is relaxed, to a position in which they secure clothes on the line, in which position the attachment is stressed. In the illustrated embodiment, the clothes pegs 3 are integrally formed with a resilient strip 4 attaching their legs remote from the rope 2 to a thicker annular portion 5 which surrounds the rope. Hinges are formed at 6 and 7, and this embodiment may be manufactured by extruding parts 3 to 7 about the rope 2 and cutting slots 8 into the extrusion. In another embodiment the pegs and their attachments are individually injection moulded and threaded onto a rope, the annular portion preferably being frustoconical. The rope may be of metal wire or nylon and the pegs and attachments of polypropylene. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Clothes lines The invention relates to clothes lines.
Wet clothes for drying are usually secured on clothes lines by use of clothes pegs most usually carried by the user in a pocket or a shoulder slung bag. However, clothes which are bulky and heavy with adsorbed water, such as wet bedclothes or table cloths, may require both the user's hands for arrangement on the clothes lines so that the pegs are then inaccessible or at best inconveniently accessible.
The invention provides a clothes line comprising a rope and clothes pegs each integrally formed with a resilient attachment to the rope, the clothes pegs individually being movable from a position adjacent to the rope, in which position the attachment is relaxed, to a position in which they secure clothes on the line, in which position the attachment is stressed.
In a clothes line according to the invention, the pegs are readily accessible whilst the clothes are being arranged on the line so that the problem above outlined is obviated.
A preferred form of clothes line according to the invention may be manufactured by passing a rope through an extrusion die at the extrusion rate, extruding continuously around the rope a plastics member having the crosssectional shape of a clothes peg integral with a strip attachment to a thicker annular portion around the rope, and forming slots through the clothes peg and strip attachment portions of the plastics member at righ angles to the direction of extrusion to separate the clothes pegs one from another. The strip attachment preferably joins to the peg arm distant from the rope. The slots may be narrow in relation to the width of the pegs, so that a continuous series of substantially adjacent pegs is formed, or may be wide in relation to the width of the pegs, so that a continuous series of spaced apart pegs is formed. If the slots are wide in relation to the width of the pegs, the plastics material removed by formation of the slots may be collected and recycled. The rope may be of any suitable material, for example metal wire or nylon, and the extruded plastics member is suitably of polypropylene. This material has the required resilience and can be formed with hinges in known manner between the strip attachment and the pegs and between the strip attachment and the thicker annular portion which remains unslotted. The extrusion may stop a short distance from each end of the rope so as to leave a length of rope for tying the line to supports at its ends.
In another embodiment of a clothes line according to the invention, individual clothes pegs each integrally formed with a strip attachment to a thicker annular portion may be formed by injection moulding any suitable plastics material and these pegs then threaded on to a rope of any suitable material. The strip attachment preferably joins to the peg arm distant from the rope when the pegs are threaded thereon. In the pegs of this embodiment, it is preferred that the hole in the annular portion be frustoconical as this enables the rope to be threaded through more easily, from the end of greater cross-section, yet still be gripped, by the end of lesser cross-section. Hinges may be formed in known manner between the strip attachment and the peg and between the strip attachment and the thicker annular portion, as in other embodiments.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, of which: Figure 1 is a perspective view from above and front of a clothes line according to the invention; and Figure 2 is a perspective view from above and rear of the clothes line of Fig. 1.
With reference to the drawings, a clothes line generally indicated 1 comprises a nylon rope 2 and a plurality of clothes pegs 3. Each peg 3 is provided with a resilient strap attachment 4, the strap attachments 4 having a common portion 5 through which the rope 2 passes. The pegs 3, attachments 4 and their common portion 5 are formed of polypropylene. It is to be understood that the pegs 3, attachments 4 and their common portion 5 are continuous along the whole length of the line 1 save for a short portion of rope 2 exposed at either end for the purpose of tying the line 1 to supports (not shown). Hinged portions 6 and 7 between the attachments 4 and the pegs 3 and between the attachments 4 and their common portion 5 respectively may be formed in known manner.
The clothes line 1 is formed by passing the rope 2 through an extrusion die at the extrusion rate, extruding the pegs 3, attachments 4 and common portion 5 thereof as a single continuous extrusion containing the hinged portions 6 and 7, and cutting slots 8 in the extrusion.
The pegs 3 are readily at hand for the user, and may be employed in a quantity appropriate to the clothes to be hung. For example one peg only, as the peg 3a, may be clipped over a light article such as a sock (not shown), whereas for a blanket (not shown) several consecutive pegs could be used at intervals along the length of the blanket.
1. A clothes line comprising a rope and clothes pegs each integrally formed with a resilient attachment to the rope, the clothes pegs individually being movable from a position adjacent to the rope, in which position the attachment is relaxed, to a position in which they secure clothes on the line, in which position the attachment is stressed.
