Abstract
A wall tie for use in cavity wall construction is formed from a single length of stainless steel wire and comprises a central stem 10 which is bent over at each end to provide a pair of anchors 12 and 13 which in use are embedded between courses in the wall leafs of a cavity wall. The bent-over portion 14 of the anchor 13 extends back towards the middle of the central stem 10 and is then further bent to form a holding means, such as the ring 15 shown, which can hold a sheet of insulation material in position against a leaf of the cavity wall internally of the cavity wall. The ring 15 may surround the stem 10, as shown, or it may be turned in the opposite direction away from the stem 10 (Figs. 6 to 8 not shown). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A wall tie
This invention relates to a wall tie and in particular provides a wall tie for use in cavity wall construction having insulation material therein, the wall tie incorporating means to hold the insulation material in position within the cavity.
According to the present invention there is provided a wall tie formed by bending from a single length of wire and comprising a central stem member which is bent over at each end to provide a pair of anchor means at opposite ends of the wall tie, the bent-over portion of one of the anchor means extending back towards the middle of the central stem member to form a support member for a holding means formed integrally therewith, the holding means being adapted to hold a sheet of insulation material in position against a leaf of a cavity wall internally of the cavity wall.
The wall tie may further incorporate means to prevent or hinder the travel of moisture along the full length of the central stem, such means preferably being a curved portion which in its use position will cause any moisture travelling along the central stem to drop under gravity when it tries to travel the said curved section.
The invention will be understood from the foliowing description of embodiments thereof given by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a first embodiment of wall tie;
Figure 2 is a side view of the wall tie of Fig.
1;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the wall tie of Fig. 1;
Figure 4 is a plan view of a second embodiment of wall tie;
Figure 5 is a side view of the wall tie of Fig.
4;
Figure 6 is a plan view of a third embodiment of wall tie;
Figure 7 is a side view of the wall tie of Fig.
6; and
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the wall tie of Fig. 6.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawings the wall tie, which is formed from a single length of stainless steel wire, comprises a central stem 10 having a curved section 11.
One end of the central stem 10 is bent back upon itself to form a U-shaped anchor means 1 2. The second end of the central stem 10 is also bent back upon itself to form a further anchor means 1 3. The bent-over portion of the anchor means 1 3 extends back towards the middle of the central stem 10 to provide a support bar 14 for an integral ring 1 5 which is turned around the central stem 10 to embrace said central stem 10.The formed ring 1 5 lies in a plane generally perpendicular to the central stem and is preferably circular-it will however be appreciated that the ring may
have a different shape e.g. rectangular or triangular, provided the formed ring 1 5 is suitable in use as a means for holding insulation material in position against a leaf of a cavity wall internally of the cavity wall.
The length of the support bar 14 and hence the position of the ring 1 5 is determined by the thickness of the insulation material to be used in conjuction with the length of the wall tie which is embedded in the leaf of the cavity wall as an anchor means.
The wall in an operative position has its anchor means 1 2 and 1 3 embedded between courses in the wall leafs of a cavity wall with the central stem 10 bridging the cavity. The ring 1 5 which embraces the central stem 10 lies against and holds in position against the inner leaf of the cavity wall a layer of insulation, for example a sheet of foamed polystyrene. The curved section 11 of the central stem 10 prevents moisture travelling from the outer leaf of the cavity wall reaching the foamed polystyrene and hence the inner leaf of the cavity wall.
In the customary method of construction of cavity walls of brick or blocks with foaming polystyrene sheets in the cavity, the sheets are manufactured with tongues and grooved edges. The vertical dimensions of the polystyrene sheets are such as to ensure that when such a sheet is in position its top edge neglecting the tongue is level with the top surface of a course of brickwork or blockwork.
The tongue only protrudes above that level. It will be appreciated that the polystyrene tongue is a soft material and the central stem 10 and the support bar 14 of the ties depress the insulating material easily. However, cuts may be made in the said material at the crossing points thus allowing the sheets to be penetrated.
In the embodiment of Figs. 4 and 5 the support bar 1 4 comprises an inclined portion 14a which lies between courses in a wall in use, and a dropped portion 14b which hangs below the contact stem 10 in use. These portions are joined by an intermediate or bend portion 1 4c which lies substantially between the courses in the manner of 14a. Since the contact stem 10 and the dropped portion 1 4b lie in a substantially vertical plane across that portion of the wall tie which is, in use, embedded in insulation material. Then if it is considered desirable to cut the insulation material in order to admit the wall tie, only a single, vertically oriented cut is necessary.
This contrasts with the two cuts which are necessary in the embodiment of Figs. 1-3, and may be regarded as an advantageous refinement, since discontinuity in the insulation should be minimized.
The embodiment of Figs. 6 to 8 is generally similar to that of Figs 1 to 3, and corresponding elements have the same reference numerals. However, the major difference is that the ring 1 5 is turned away from the central stem 10, rather than towards and surrounding the latter. This makes the wall tie particularly susceptable to machine manufacture by bending from a single piece of wire.
In order that the holding ring 1 5 be located close to the central stem 10, the support arm 14 is brought to lie more closely adjacent the stem 10 than in the previous embodiments.
