Abstract

Clutches, friction; operating clutches. - The speed of electrically-driven kinematographs is kept constant by a form of centrifugal slipping clutch having its parts freely mounted on a through shaft. An electromotor 11 and the clutch mechanism 13 are carried by a hanger 10 bolted to the web 6 of the casting 1. which supports the tilting head 3 and is adjustably mounted on legs 9. The motor base 12 is adjustable by a screw 16 to tension a driving-belt 15, the driven belt 17 being tensioned by spring-controlled jockey pulleys 18, 19. The clutch mechanism comprises discs 25, 27, rotatably mounted on a spindle 23 and rigid with driving and driven pulleys 22, 34 respectively. A leather or fibre washer 26 is secured to either or each disc, and may have a radial slot to prevent the formation of a vacuum between the discs. A compression spring 29, housed in a casing 28, bears on collars 30, 31 and thrusts by two or more rods 32 on a member 33 carrying the disc 27, these rods passing through and conveying rotation to a member 51, which is engaged also by rods 35 carried by a collar 35<a> and serving to limit the axial motion of the part 51. Hook-ended centrifugal masses 53 are pivoted on the member 51 and engage a flange 55 of the member 33 to relieve the pressure between the discs at the desired speed. The compression of the spring 29 is regulated by an arm 47 linked to a bell-crank lever 43, Fig. 2, which is engaged by a nut 41 cooperating with a threaded spindle 38 controlled by hand-wheels 39 on both sides of the machine. Further adjustment may be provided, comprising a set-screw 49 carried in a lever 44 and contacting with an arm 48 rigid with the arm 47. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the application of the centrifugal speed-controlling device to a contracting-band clutch. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
