Abstract
A cutting tool e.g. a reamer of circular cross-section for a machine tool includes a body portion 1 and two pairs of cutting blades 2 releasably mounted in diametrically opposed recesses 11 formed in the body. The sides of the recesses constitute locating faces 13, 14 for the cutting blades and are aligned to two diameters of the cutting tool which intersect at right angles. The cutting blades 2 are urged against the locating faces 13, 14 by clamping wedges 4, 5 which are in turn urged against the cutting blades by a screw 3 acting along the diameter bisecting the two recesses. The base locating face of each cutting blade 2 is tapered relatively to the cutting face and is located on an inclined surface formed in the base of each of the recesses such that the movement of the cutting blade along the inclined surface, by an adjustment screw acting on the blade, causes an increase or decrease in the cutting diameter of the tool. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Cutting Tool
The present invention relates to cutting tools of the type normally comprising a circular body around a peripheral portion of which is contained removable cutter blades located in slots or recesses.
A cutting tool of the present invention comprises a body portion, for securing into the carrier of a machine tool, two pairs of cutting blades, each including a cutting face and an oppositely formed base locating face, releasably mounted in diametrically opposed recesses formed in the said body, each recess including one locating face for each of one pair of cutting blades formed such that the blades are equally spaced around the said body, each said locating face being perpendicular to one of two diameters of the body and intersecting at right angles, the said cutting blades being retained in position by the action of two oppositely located clamp means, each said clamp means acting against each of one pair of said cutting blades to retain them against their respective said locating faces, both said clamp means being urged against said cutting blades by a single means acting along a diameter bisecting said recesses.
Preferably the said single means comprises a screw passing through axially aligned passageways formed in one clamp means and in the body and being located in a screw-threaded axially aligned passageway formed in the opposite said clamp means.
Most preferably the base locating face of each cutting blade is tapered relatively to the cutting face and located on an inclined surface formed in each said recess such that movement of the cutting blade along the inclined surface causes an increase or decrease in the cutting diameter of the tool. Adjustable means acting on each cutting blade are provided to vary the position of the said blade along the inclined surface.
One embodiment of a cutting tool according to the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic representation of a cutting tool in side elevation.
Figure 2 is a cross-section of a tool of Figure 1 along the lines A-A, and
Figure 3 is an exploded view of Figure 2.
The cutting tool illustrated is a reeming tool and comprises a circular body portion of 1, in a front face of which are formed two diametrically opposed identically shaped recesses 1 1 and 12 which recesses include blade locating faces 13 and 14 and inclined locating surfaces 15 and 16 respectively. Two cutting blades 2, having cutting faces 21 and 23 and base locating faces 22 and 24 are positioned in each said recess with side face of the blades bearing against the recess locating faces 13 and 14, and the base locating faces 21 and 23 in contact with the inclined surfaces 15 and 16 respectively.
The locating faces 13 and 14 are formed such that when cutting blades 2 are in the cutting position they are each normal to a diameter of the body.
The cutting blades 2 are retained in position by two clamp means comprising a wedge 4 and a wedge nut 5 having a screw thread 51. Wedge 4 and body 1 contain passageways 41 and 42 respectively which are in axial alignment with wedge nut 5 and are dimensioned to receive a bolt 3 (not shown in Figures 1 and 3) containing screw threads 31 to engage with the like threads 51 in wedge nut 5. By screwing bolt 3 into wedge nut 5 the wedge 4 and wedge nut 5 are drawn together to firmly clamp the cutting blades against movement.
The position of each blade 2 along the inclined surface 15 is determined by means of adjusting screws 6 located in screw threaded holes 61 formed in the back of each recess. By screwing screws 6 outwardly the blades are located further up the inclined surface 15 to increase the cutting diameter of the tool.
With the blade clamped in position the tool can be reground to the required size by conventional techniques.
Claims
1. A cutting tool comprising a body portion having a substantially circular cross-section and capable of being secured into the carrier of a machine tool, two pairs of cutting blades, each including a cutting face and an oppositely formed base locating face, releasably mounted in diametrically opposed recesses formed in a peripheral portion of said body, each recess including one locating face for each of one pair of cutting blades formed such that the blades are equally spaced around the said body, each said locating face being perpendicular to one of two diameters of the body which diameters intersect at right angles, the said cutting blades being retained in position by the action of two oppositely located clamp means, each said clamp means acting against each of one pair of said cutting blades to retain them against their respective locating faces, said clamp means being urged against said cutting blades by a single means acting along a third diameter bisecting said recess.
2. A cutting tool according to claim 1 wherein said single means comprises a screw passing through radially directed passageways formed in one clamp means and in the body and being in screw-threaded engagement with a radially directed passageway formed in the opposite said clamp means.
3. A cutting tool according to claims 1 or 2 wherein the base locating face of each cutting blade is tapered relatively to the cutting face and located on an inclined surface formed in the base of each said recess such that movement of the cutting blade along the inclined surface causes an increase or decrease in the cutting diameter of the tool.
