Abstract

A wind propelled propulsion unit for a water-borne craft comprises a rotatably mounted vertical mast which drives centrifugal vanes enabling propulsion of the craft through water on rotation of the mast due to the unequal resistance to wind of two wind vanes which are fixedly attached to the mast and which are adjustable in configuration according to the wind direction. These vanes comprise flexible sheet material stretched over a framework to produce part-cylindrical vanes and the adjustability of configuration is achieved by a cantilever arrangement whereby the curvature of the vanes can be reversed allowing continued propulsion of the craft in the event of reversed wind direction. Alternatively the wind vanes may be rotatable about a horizontal axis through their centres so that their configuration can be reversed by a 180 DEG rotation, about this axis. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Wind propelled variable rotary vanes for marine/' land, power induction drive The propulsion unit consists of vanes of appropriate dimensions relative to the object it is driving, mounted on an automatic sprung roller on a mast, to increase or decrease area of vanes by rolling in or out; the vanes being of canvas or such suitable material, stretched over an automatically controlled framework which alters by control to assume the correct aerodynamic configuration to enable the vanes to rotate efficiently with the wind direction changes encountered in piotting a course. The power thugs imparted through the vanes rotating on a rotating mast, drives the propelling unit.Alternatively the change of configuration of the vanes can be achieved by having the vanes made of a fixed rigid material mounted on a frame with a horizontal axis running in the centre of the two outer edges of the vanes, enabling the whole unit to be rotated to an upside down position or back again, locking into the mast on each occasion thereby assuming an opposite configuration to the former, in order to meet the change in wind direction to meet the course required, the aerodynamic contour of the vane being such to create a forward thrust in relation to the wind direction as it rotates, such as in a conventional sail, close to the wind in a tack.
See drawing in original specification Ref. 35274/1977.
1. A wind propelled propulsion unit for a waterborne craft comprising two wind vanes fixedly attached to a rotatably mounted vertical mast rotation of which is harnessed to provide propulsion of the craft, said wind vanes presenting unequal resistance to the wind on diametrically opposed sides of the mast so as to produce rotation of said mast by the wind.
