Abstract

An attachment for an angler's fishing line for connection to the line adjacent to a sinker weight has releasable anchor members 13b adapted to engage in the sea or river bed after casting. The members 13b are pivotally secured to the attachment to pivot on line retrieved to release line and weight. The anchor means may also take the form of flexible or resilient blades. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION An attachment for an angler's fishing line This invention concerns an attachment for an angler's line and has for its object to provide an attachment for use in conjunction with a sinker weight of any form, and which will serve the purpose of anchoring the weight to the sea or river bed after casting and which will be released on line retrieval.
Our prior Patent Specification No. 1346697 dis closes a sinker weight for an angler's line having springy wires which serve to anchor the weight to the sea or river bed when cast, said wires being pivoted to the weight and yieldingly held in the anchor position so as to pivot with respect to the weight when the line is pulled forwardly and swing to extend rearwardly on line retrieval.
According to the invention the attachment comprises a body portion adapted for connection to the line end forwardly of a sinker weight said body having springy anchor members held to extend therefrom forwardly in use to anchor the line and weight to the sea or river bed, the members yielding on line retrieval to move rearwardly to release the line and weight.
This arrangement has the advantage that the attachment which can be of little weight, can be used with any form of sinker. The sinker can be exchanged e.g. for a heavier or lighter one, using the same attachment.
The body can be solid or hollow and if hollow the line can pass therethrough to be attached to the weight. Alternatively the line can be attached to one end of the body e.g. to an eye and the weight attached to the other end by a short length of line or a swivel or the like secured at one end to the body and at the other to the eye of the weight.
Conveniently the members comprise springy wires pivotally secured to the body at their one ends and in use in the anchor position extending forwardly along the body and then splaying away from the body means being provided to hold the wires in such position to anchor the body and weight.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which: Figure lisa side view of one embodiment, Figure 2 a perspective view of another embodiment, Figure 3 an end view of Figure 1, Figure 4 a side view of another embodiment and Figure 5 is a view of a modification.
As shown in Figure 1,the attachment consists of a body 10 with an eye or swivel 11 at one end for line attachment and an eye or swivel 11 a at the other end for attachment of a sinker weight. A band 12 circumscribes the body and diametrical bores are made through the body relatively at right angles, each to receive the base 1 3a of a generally U-bent springy wire the limb parts 13b of which form prongs and splay as shown and are directed forwardly towards the angler.
The band 12 is notched so that the wires are firmly held as shown, and in use an adjacent two limbs can anchor in the sea or river bed but on line retrieval a sharp pull will move the body forwardly so that the wires swing rearwardly and are effectively collapsed. Alternatively the body can be notched and the wires kinked or bent to provide protuberences to engage therein.
In another arrangement not illustrated the U-bent wire portions can be close to the body and held by an elastic band in the anchor position, the band being discarded from the body rearwardlyon line retrieval.
In Figure 1 the body is solid. In Figure 2 the body is hollow and the line may pass therethrough or be connected at the forward end the body having a line portion or link extending from its rear end for sinker weight attachment.
Referring to Figure 4, the body is formed with recesses or flutings 14 and the wires have beads 15 each to be received in a recess in the anchor position.
The wires also can be arranged with the base parts and bores parallel as described in our Patent No.
134697.
In the arrangement shown in Figure 5, the body (which may be solid or hollow) is formed or fitted with an encircling band 1 2a, and the anchor members are hinged thereto by portions 16, the band having studs 17 and the portions 16 recesses (or vice versa) so that when casting the anchor members are held to the body by stud and recess engagement as shown in full lines and on retrieval the studs disengage from the recesses as shown in broken lines. The band 12a and portions 16 preferably are of synthetic plastic material.
In another arrangement, not illustrated, the anchor members are in the form of blades which extend from a band or collar around the body, these blades being directed forwardly and providing the anchor members, being resilient or flexible so as to bend and release the attachment on line retrieval.
It will be understood that the attachment which can be of synthetic plastic can be used with wights of any form, e.g. torpedo, ring, disc or lozenge shape and that weights are readily changeable without removing the attachment.
Although reference is made herein to wires it is to be understood that this term includes springythin rod-like elements or prongs of material other than metal such as synthetic plastics.
