Abstract

A point protector for tie pins and like articles of jewellery comprises a resilient plastics material body 1 with two end pieces 2 and 3 contained in a precious metal casing 4. The metal casing is initially a tube which is counter- drilled at each end to provide locations for the end pieces, when the body 1 and the end pieces are inserted the casing is formed on the body trapping the body and the end pieces. The body, one end piece, and the casing have bores for receiving the point to be shielded. The invention also is directed to the method of making the protector. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to point protectors The present invention concerns a protector for a point in jewelry and a method of making such a protector.
In articles such as pointed tie pins, there is a danger that the wearer might scratch himself on an exposed point.
One aspect of the present invention provides a point protector for protecting the point of a tie pin comprising a tube adapted to be a tight fit on the pin.
To prevent the protector coming too far back along the pin and leaving the point exposed, the tube has a blind end. So that the protector does not have to be precisely made and matched with the individual pin, the tube is preferably of a resilient material such as a suitable plastics material but to match the material of the pin is coated or contained in a casing of the material of the pin. A metal casing has the advantage that the end cannot be forced through the blind end of the plastics material tubing especially if the cladding is formed to seal the blind end. A further advantage of the use of cladding in the form of a casing is that it enables the plastics material tubing to comprise discrete members.
Another aspect of the invention provides a method of making a point protector for a point of a tie pin or the like comprising assembling a through bore piece of plastics tubing with an imperforate end piece in a metal tube and forming the metal down on the tubing and the end piece so as to leave a cladding with an opening at one end through which a pin can be inserted for engagement with the tubing and with the other end sealed by the end piece.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying cross-section of a protector.
The protector illustrated comprises a piece of plastics tubing 1 having at one end an imperforate end piece 2 and at the other a perforate end piece 3; the hole in the piece 3 can be of the same size or larger than the bore of the tubing and the material of the endpieces can be the same as each other and of the tubing or at least the end piece 2 can be of a more resistant plastics material. The tubing and the end pieces are contained in a 9 carat gold cladding 4 formed by spinning or otherwise forming a tube down onto the tubing and the end pieces so as to close off the end with the piece 2.
To provide location for the end pieces, the metal tube can be counter-drilled at each end to provide slight shoulders for the end pieces to engage on.
The size of the protector is very small. It can be 1 centimetre long by about 3 millimetres diameter. It is simply made without waste of any precious metal apart from the minimal amount of the counter drilling. Thus it can be made from precious metals such as gold, silver, and platinum.
1. Apointprotectorfora point of a tie pin or the like comprising a tube adapted to be a tight fit on the pin.
2. A point protector as claimed in claim 1 wherein the tube is a plastics material body and has a blind end.
3. A point protector according to claim 2 wherein the blind end is blanked off by a discrete end piece and wherein a casing surrounds the tube and the end piece holding them together.
4. A point protector according to claim 3 having another end piece at the other end of the tube which another end piece has a bore in line with the hole in the tube.
5. A point protector according to claim 4 wherein the casing has internal shoulders for locating the end pieces.
6. A point protector substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
7. A method of making a point protector for a point of a tie pin or the like comprising assembling a through bore piece of plastics tubing with an imperforate end piece in a metal tube and forming the metal down on the tubing and the end piece so as to leave a cladding with an opening at one end through which a pin can be inserted for engagement with the tubing and with the other end sealed by the end piece.
8. A method according to claim 7 having a perforate end piece at the pin insertion end.
9. A method according to claim 8 wherein the cladding tube is counter-drilled so as to define shoulders for locating the end pieces.
10. A method of making a point protector substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
