Abstract

A door construction has two door leaves hinged to a frame and arranged to be parallel in the door closed position with an air space 14 between them. The two leaves are connected by a rigid link 10 pivoted to the leaves and slidable in a track 13 so that the leaves open together when either one or the other of the leaves is moved. One of the leaves 3 is narrower than the other leaf 4 so that the door can be opened through 90 DEG from its closed position. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A flreprotecfive double door This invention relates to a fire-protective double door which has two door leaves arranged so as to be parallel with an air space enclosed between them in the closed position. The two door leaves can be opened as one.
For some particular applications, particularly where hydrocarbon materials are stored or handled, e.g. refineries or oil rigs, fire protective doors have to be able to withstand a very sudden increase in temperature as well as a very high maximum temperature. To obtain the necessary fire resistance, it is advantageous to include an air space in the door.
According to the invention, there is provided a fireprotective double door comprising two door leaves each arranged to be hinged to a door frame at one edge, one of the leaves being narrower than the other, the two leaves being interconnected by a linkage which permits them to be opened together and constraine them to remain parallel during opening and closing.
The invention also provides a fire-protective door and door frame construction comprising two door leaves, one of which is narrower than the other, which are hinged to a door frame so that in the door closed position the two leaves are parallel but spaced apart, the two leaves being connected by a linkage which ensures that both leaves open and close together and remain parallel during opening and closing movement.
The relative positions of the hinges of the two leaves can be such that, in the open position, the leaves lie against one another or such that they are still spaced apart.
The linkage can be any suitable type using a sliding, pivoting or lattice arrangement, or a combination of any of these, to ensure that both leaves move when either one of them is pulled or pushed, and that the leaves remain parallel during movement.
The leaves can be arranged so that the air space between them in the door closed position is of the order of 30 mm.
A door-closing device will normally be provided to return the door to the closed position after it has been opened.
Each door leaf will be of a standard fire door construction appropriate for the particular application.
The invention will be further described, by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows a plan view of a door and door frame according to the invention.
In the Figure, a door 1 is shown in a wall 2. The door consists of two door leaves 3 and 4 hinged to the wall 2 at 5 and 6. The door leaf 3 is narrower than the leaf 4 and the left-hand side of the wall 2 has correspondingly positioned rebates 7, 8 for receiving the edges of the leaves when the door is closed.
The door is to be opened in the direction indicated by the arrow 9.
The leaves are connected by a rigid link 10. This link is pivoted to each leaf at 11 and 12 respectively.
The pivot 12 is slidable in a track 13 in the larger door leaf 4. The link 10 bridges the air space 14 enclosed between the two leaves.
The position of the leaves 3 and 4 when the door is opened are shown in dotted lines. It will be seen that the link 10 has taken up a different position from that shown between the closed leaves, and that the pivot point has slid along the track 13. The two leaves remain parallel and are flat against one another.
There will normally be a latch to secure the door in the closed position. A door-closing device will be provided, and this can act on either one or both of the door leaves.
It must be emphasised that the link 10 shown in the drawings is only an example of the numerous ways in which the leaves could be connected so that they open and close together, and provide an enclosed air space in the closed position.
The enclosed space 14 acts as insulation between the two opposite sides of the door, and prevents the leaf on the far side of the door from a fire from being directly attacked by the fire.
The door leaves 3 and 4 can, for example, be of the type described in our British Patent No. 1 479 983.
1. A fire protective double door comprising two door leaves each arranged to be hinged to a door frame at one edge, one of the leaves being narrower than the other, the two leaves being interconnected by a linkage which permits them to be opened together and constrains them to remain parallel during opening and closing.
2. A fire protective door and door frame construction comprising two door leaves, one of which is narrower than the other, which are hinged to a door frame so that in the door closed position the two leaves are parallel but spaced apart, the two leaves being connected by a linkage which ensures that both leaves open and close together and remain parallel during opening and closing movement.
3. A construction as claimed in claim 2, wherein the hinges of the two leaves are arranged such that, in the open position, the leaves lie against one another.
4. A construction as claimed in claim 2 or claim 3, wherein the leaves are arranged so that the air space between them in the door closed position is of the order of 30 mm.
5. A construction as claimed in any one of claims 2 to 4, wherein a door closing device is provided to return the door to the closed position after it has been opened.
6. A construction as claimed in any one of claims 2 to 5, wherein each door leave is of a standard fire door construction.
7. A fire protective double door substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
8. A fire protective door and door frame construction substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
