SPECIFICATION Valve device
5 This invention relates to a valve device for use in a valve housing (sanitary fitting) and employing a flat valve seat and a flat valve regulating disc.
Valve devices of this type are known from 10 German patent specification DE-PS 337 603 and US patent specification 2 583 869. The disc valves are distinguished by a very high service life with virtually maintenance-free operation particularly where highly wear and 1 5 erosion-resistant materials, such as, for example, hard metal or oxide ceramics, are used. However, the disadvantage of these valve devices is the arrangement of the discs in a valve housing which is cost-intensive and in-20 volves a relatively high degree of outlay. In the US patent specification, the suggestion is made, to encapsulate the valve elements in a special housing for the sake of simplicity and to introduce this capsule as a unit into the * 25 valve housing proper and secure the same.
Nevertheless, this requires forming the actual valve housing to match the capsule or cartridge. Exchange or installation in normal, conventional valves or taps or retrofitting in 30 valves or taps having a standard top part with axially moveable sealing cone is impossible.
According to the present invention there is provided a valve device, for use in a sanitary fitting, comprising a valve device housing 35 having a first portion adapted to be sealingly secured in the fitting and a second portion which in use of the valve device protrudes from the fitting an apertured flat valve seat disc arranged immovably in the second por-40 tion, and a flat valve regulating disc arranged in the second portion, seated on the valve seat disc and rotatable with respect thereto by a control element, the first portion being provided with inflow and outflow pipes and the 45 inflow pipe being adapted to be connected to a valve seat of the fitting in a leaktight manner.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying 50 drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a section through a tap valve;
Figure 2 shows a partial section taken on line A-B of Fig. 1;
55 Figure 3 shows a section through another tap valve;
Figure 4 shows a partial section taken on line C-D of Fig. 3; and
Figure 5 shows a bottom view of a valve 60 regulating disc.
For the sake of simplicity, the same reference symbols have been used to identify the same or corresponding elements in the embodiments shown in the drawings. 65 The tap valve (sanitary fitting) shown in
Figs. 1 and 2 consists of a valve housing 1 with a securing and connection socket 101 and a spout 102. The valve housing 1 is also designed for operation with a top valve part 70 (standard top part) with axially moveable valve cone (not shown). For this reason, a movement thread 1 5 and a valve seat 5, such as are required for operation using what is known as a standard top part, are provided in 75 the valve housing 1.
A special valve device housing 2 is screwed via pipe socket 14 into the valve housing 1 and is secured leaktight in its required position by means of a lock nut 23 and a sealing 80 ring 24. A coaxially designed inflow pipe 3 is fed into a central bore in the valve seat 5 and sealed at the outer surface by means of an O-ring 20.
Approximately in its centre, the special 85 housing 2 has a base 6 with a central inflow aperture 7 which is connected to the valve seat 5 by the inflow pipe 3. Two outflow apertures 8 are provided in the base adjacent diagonally opposite parts of the inflow aper-90 ture 7. On the side of the base 6 away from the inflow pipe 3, two concentrically arranged seals 103 are recessed and a valve seat disc 9 with appropriate inflow and outflow apertures is brought to rest in lead-tight manner and 95 incapable of rotation, The free (upper) end wall of the valve seat disc interacts with a valve regulating disc 1 3, pressing down upon it and moveable by means of a rotating spindle 11, which an overflow passage 10 (Fig. 100 5), recessed into the surface, is provided by means of which the outflow apertures 8 can be closed or opened to a lesser or greater extent depending upon the rotational position of the valve regulating disc. The contact pres-105 sure for the valve regulating disc is brought about by a bell-shaped housing end cover 1 2, forming part of the special housing 2, which is secured by means of a thread and in which the rotating spindle 11 is also mounted. A 110 valve actuating handle 22, which is secured to the extreme end of the rotating spindle 11, is cup-shaped to good advantage and encloses the part of the special housing 2 protruding from the housing 1 of the fitting. Here, an 115 additional rotational support 25 for the valve actuating handle 22 is formed by the outside surface of the lock nut 23, which is substantially cylindrical.
If the connecting and securing socket 101 120 is now connected to a mains supply line, the medium will flow, when overflow passage 10 coincides with the outflow apertures 8, in the direction of the arrows shown in the drawing into the special housing 2, will enter the 125 overflow passage 10 running transverse to the incoming flow direction via the valve seat disc 9 and be turned back into the outflow pipe 4 limited by the pipe socket 1 5 through the outflow apertures 8 and pass into the spout 130 102 of the valve housing 1. If the valve

2
regulating disc 1 3 is rotated in relation to the valve seat disc 9 by means of the valve actuating handle 22, the throughflow cross-sections are reduced or increased accordingly 5 until the valve is either fully open or fully closed in the respective end positions. Here, the rotational movement can be limited to good advantage to the range "fully open" to "fully closed" by means of a stop. 10 The valve device can be dismantled by simply undoing the lock unit and unscrewing the pipe socket 14 from the valve housing 1 after cutting off the mains supply. It is then possible to screw in a conventional top valve 15 part with an axially moveable valve cone into the valve housing 1 and operate the valve by this means.
Another embodiment of the invention is shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and differs from the 20 embodiment described with respect to Figs. 1 and 2 in the shape of the inflow pipe 3 and the arrangement of seals between the base 6 and the valve seat disc 9.
The inflow pipe 3 is fitted with a plate-25 shaped sealing disc 21 at the end away from the base 6 so that the sealing disc 21 is pressed tightly against the end face of the valve seat 5 as a result of screwing pipe socket 14 into thread 1 5 on connection. 30 To enable the contact pressure force of the valve elements 9 and 13 lying one on top of the other to adapt to the pressure of the inflowing medium, annular grooves 16 are provided in the base 6 concentrically around 35 the outflow apertures 8 and a further annular groove 1 7, arranged concentrically around the inflow aperture 7 but enclosing all the apertures in the base 6, accommodate seals 18 to provide the seal between the base 6 and the 40 valve seat disc 9. By this means, a pressure chamber is provided between the base 6 and the valve disc 9 in which the pressure of the incoming medium is brought into effect whereby the effective pressure surface area 45 19 of the valve seat disc 9 is designed greater in contrast to the effective pressure surface area of the valve regulating disc 1 3. The result thereof is that the valve seat disc 9 is always pressed against the valve regulating 50 disc 13 as a function of the pressure in the means supply line.
The mode of function of this embodiment of the invention otherwise corresponds to that described above for Figs. 1 and 2. 55 The valve devices of the present invention can, therefore, be retrofitted into already existing valve housings, e.g. valves with a sealing cone axially moveable in the top part.
By arranging the valve device housing to 60 have a portion which is increased in cross-section, protrudes from the valve housing and in which the valve elements can be arranged in optimum manner, large through-flow volumes can be obtained with favourable flow 65 behaviour. The portion of the valve device housing kept smaller in cross-section merely accommodates the inflow and outflow pipes and can, therefore, be formed in its peripheral dimension to correspond to the screw housing 70 of standard tap upper parts with axially movable valve cones. The advantage here is that the inflow can take place through the pipe 3 formed centrally in the smaller portion, the outer end of which provides the connec-75 tion to the valve seat of a standard valve.
