In an alternative embodiment, the spigot 18 is provided with a tapered screw thread. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Interconnectable rods The present invention relates to interconnectable rods of the type used for cleaning chimneys or unblocking drains.
Such rods are normally made from an elongate member, such as a cane, having a male threaded member at one end and a female threaded member at the other end, such that the male member of one rod may be threadedly connected to the female member of another rod to thereby connect the rods to one another.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a rod comprising an elongate member having a central bore at each end, a first connecting member at one end and a second connecting member at the opposite end, the connecting members being co-operable with complementary connecting members on other rods to enable the rods to be connected to one another in an end to end fashion, the connecting members each having a central spigot received in the centre bores of the elongate member and locking means being provided for lockably connecting the spigot to the elongate member to prevent separation thereof.
Preferably the locking means comprise a rivet extending transversely through the walls of the connecting member, the elongate member and the central spigot.
Alternatively, or in addition the locking means may comprise an external thread formation on the spigot enabling it to be threadedly received in said bore.
Preferably the connecting members are moulded from a suitable plastics material, for instance a polycarbonate.
Advantageously, the elongate member is an extrusion of a suitable plastics material, such as polypropylene, and possesses a single central bore which extends its whole length.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an axial section through a first embodiment according to the present invention; Figure 2 is an axial section through a second embodiment according to the present invention .
The first embodiment is shown generally at 10 and includes an elongate member 11 having a central bore 12 extending throughout its length. The elongate member is made from a suitable material such as polypropylene and is conveniently formed by extrusion.
A male coupling member 13 is located at one end of the elongate member 11 and comprises an externally threaded portion 14 and a sleeve portion 16 defining a bore 17 having a diameter substantially the same as the external diameter of the elongate member so that the elongate member may be located within the bore 17 as shown. The male coupling member 13 also has a centrally extending spigot 18 which has an external diameter similar to the internal diameter of bore 12.
The spigot 18 is preferably provided with a slight taper in order to facilitate entry into the bore 1 2.
Locking means is provided in the form of a rivet 20 which extends through the walls of the connecting member, the elongated member and the spigot thereby lockably connecting the spigot to the elongate member.
The opposite end of the elongate member is provided with a female coupling member 21 which is of the same construction as the male coupling member apart from the provision of an internally threaded bore 22 intended to threadedly receive the threaded portion 14 of a male coupling member of another rod.
The second embodiment is similar to the first embodiment apart from the construction of the central spigot of the male and female coupling members; accordingly parts similar to those in Fig. 1 have been designated by the same reference numerals.
In Fig. 2 the spigot 18 of both the male and coupling members is provided with locking means in the form of an external screw formation 25. Preferably, the material from which the spigot 18 is formed is sufficiently hard enough for the screw formation to cut a complementary screw formation into the elongate member.
However, if desired it will be appreciated that the bore 12 may be provided with an internal screw formation at each end in order to threadedly receive the spigot 18.
If desired, a rivet may be provided as in the first embodiment for preventing rotation of the coupling member relative to the elongate member.
The male and female coupling members are preferably made from a suitable plastics material, such as a polycarbonate, and are formed by moulding in one piece.
Rods made in accordance with the present invention are easy and cheap to manufacture and the coupling members are securely locked to the elongate member.
CLAIMS (3 Sep 1979) 1. A rod comprising an elongate member having a central bore at each end, a first connecting member at one end and a second connecting member at the opposite end, the connecting members being co-operable with complementary connecting members on other rods to enable the rods to be connected to one another in an end to end fashion, the connecting members each having a central spigot received in the centre bore of the elongate member and locking means being provided for lockably connecting the spigot to the elongate member to prevent separation
