Abstract

A motor road vehicle has front and rear brake lights 13, 14 which radiate visual signals forwardly and rearwardly from the vehicle whenever a brake of the vehicle is actuated. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Vehicle with means for indicating brake operation Description of Invention: THIS INVENTION relates to a vehicle.
According to the invention, there is provided a vehicle having a brake and signalling means for providing a visual signal when the brake is actuated, wherein the signalling means is so positioned on the vehicle that said visual signal can be received by a person situated in front of the vehicle.
Motor road vehicles usually have signalling means in the form of brake lights for providing a visual signal to the drivers of following vehicles when the brake of the vehicle fitted with the brake lights is actuated. Such brake lights are positioned at the rear of the vehicle.
A vehicle according to the present invention provides a signal which can be seen by the driver of an approaching vehicle which is travelling in the opposite direction so that if the brake of the vehicle in accordance with the invention is actuated, the driver of the approaching vehicle will become aware of this fact. There are many situations in which such awareness would contribute to the safety of road users.
The signalling means preferably comprises an electrically energisable light source. The light source may be adapted to emit green light.
The signalling means may comprise two light sources disposed at the front of the vehicle, one adjacent to each side of the vehicle.
A vehicle embodying the invention will now be described, with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows the vehicle diagrammatically.
The vehicle illustrated in the accompanying drawing is a motor road vehicle having an engine (not shown) and the usual controls for operation by a driver. The sole control shown in the accompanying drawing is a brake pedal 10 which can be depressed by the driver to actuate brakes associated with the vehicle wheels in the usual manner.
Adjacent to the brake pedal 10, there is mounted an electrical switch 11 which is closed whenever the pedal is depressed. The switch 11 is connected electrically with a source 1 2 of electric current, front signalling means and rear signalling means. The front signalling means comprises a pair of electrically energisable light sources 1 3 mounted on the front of the vehicle, one adjacent to each side of the vehicle. The light sources 1 3 are adapted, when energised, to radiate green light forwardly from the vehicle so that such can be received by a person situated in front of the vehicle, for example the driver of an approaching vehicle which is travelling in the opposite direction. The rear signalling means comprises a further pair of electrically energisable light sources 1 4 which are mounted at the rear of the vehicle. The light sources 14 are adapted, when energised, to radiate red light rearwardly from the vehicle.
When the vehicle is in use, whenever the pedal 10 is depressed to actuate the vehicle brake, the front light sources 1 3 and the rear light sources 1 4 emit respective visual signals which can be seen by other road users to warn such users that the vehicle is being braked.
1. A vehicle having a brake and signalling means for providing a visual signal when the brake is actuated, wherein the signalling means is so positioned on the vehicle that said signal can be received by a person situated in front of the vehicle.
2. A vehicle according to claim 1 wherein the signalling means comprises an electrically energisable light source.
3. A vehicle according to claim 1 wherein the signalling means comprises two light sources disposed at the front of the vehicle.
4. A vehicle according to claim 3 wherein said light sources are disposed one adjacent to each side of the vehicle.
5. A vehicle substantially as herein described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawing.
