Description

SPECIFICATION Heavy Duty Liquid Detergent Compositions The present invention relates to pourable, heavy-duty, built liquid detergent compositions.
Heavy-duty liquid detergent compositions are well known and have been employed extensively as household and commercial detergents. Built liquid detergents are superior to unbuilt formulations on an equal cost basis. Alkylbenzene sulphonates built with phosphate builders, such as pentasodium tripolyphosphate, usually have better performance than equivalent cost unbuilt detergents. However, many of such built liquid compositions suffer from disadvantages such as discoloration, gelling or separation of components on standing.
It is now been found that stable, heavy-duty liquid detergent compositions in the form of pourable solutions, suspensions, emulsions or coacervates can be prepared by a particular selection as to composition, especially where an optical brightener is to be included. The compositions of the present invention can be stored for months, even at low temperatures, without showing any substantial alteration in visual appearance.
'According to the present invention there is provided a pourable heavy-duty liquid detergent composition comprising, in an aqueous base:- (a) at least one anionic detergent including an alkoxysulphate salt of an alcohol, each said anionic detergent being water soluble; (b) at least one optical brightening agent or soluble dye selected from:: (i) an N,N'-Bis arylamino-alkylaminotriazine diaminostilbene disulphonic acid, or its salts, preferably an N,N'-Bis[anilinoalkylaminotriazine] diaminostilbene disulphonic acid or a salt thereof, e.g. the sodium salt of N,N'-Bis[4-anilino-6-monoethylamino- 1 ,3,5-triazine]-4,4'- diaminostilbene-2,2'-disulphonic acid (available under the trade name Tinopal LMS from Ciba-Geigy); (ii) an N,N'-Bis[di(arylamino)triazine]diaminostilbene disulphonic acid, or its salts, preferably an N,N'-Bis[di(anilino)triazine]diaminostilbene disulphonic acid or a salt thereof, e.g. the sodium salt of N,N'-Bis[4,6-dianilino-1 ,3,5-triazine]-4,4'-diaminostilbene-2,2'-disulphonic acid (available under the trade name Tinopal TAS);; (iii) a Bis(sulphostyryl)biphenyl, or its salts, e.g., 4,4'-Bis(o-sulphostyryl)biphenyl (available under the trade name Tinopal CBS); (iv) a Bis(aryltriazol)stilbene sulphonic acid, or its salts, e.g. 4,4'-Bis(4-phenyl-2H-1 ,2,3-triaz-2 yl)-2,2'-stilbene dipotassium sulphonte (available under the trade name Blankophor BHC from Bayer); (v) a Naphthyltriazole-stilbene suiphonic acid, or its salts, e.g. Naphthyltriazole-stilbene monosulphonate (available under the trade name Tinopal RBS); (vi) soluble dyes substantive to common fabrics; and (c) one or more conventional detergent builders, including a phosphate builder.
Not all optical brighteners are satisfactory in heavy-duty built liquid detergent compositions.
Optical brightening agents normally used in detergent compositions, such as the sodium salt of N,N' Bis(4-Anilino-6-morpholino-1 ,3,5-triazine)4,4'-diaminostilbene-2,2'-disulphonic acid (available under the trade name Tinopal DMS) and the sodium salt of N,N'-Bis[4-anilino-6-(N-2-hydroxyethyl-N methylamino)-1 ,3,5-triazine]-4,4'-diaminostilbene-2,21-disulphonic acid (available under the trade name Tinopal 5BMS) are unsatisfactory, causing one or more of the following defects, rapid separation of the composition of the liquid detergent, discoloration or gelling in storage. Two of the preferred optical brightening agents-listed under (i) and (ii) above-used in compositions according to the present invention are rarely used in detergent compositions and their usefulness in compositions according to the present invention was discovered only after exhaustive testing and experimentation.
Further, as will be indicated below, the manner in which the optical brightening agent is added during preparation of the compositions influences the properties of the final product.
The anionic detergents include at least one alkoxysulphate salt of an alcohol. Generally these would fall within the general formula RO. (CnH2nO)mSO3M wherein R is an alkyl or alkylaryl radical containing 6-18 carbon atoms, preferably 12-1 5 carbon atoms, in the alkyl radical, which may either be a linear or a branched chain; M is an alkali metal (preferably Na), ammonium or substituted ammonium radical; n is 2 or 3; and m is from 1 to 8, preferably from 2 to 4.
It is preferred to use a C12-C15 linear primary alcohol ethoxysulphate sodium salt. Other anionic detergents, for example alkylaryl sulphonates such as alkylbenzene sulphonates, may be included in the composition. Generally, the amount of anionic detergent or surfactant present may vary from 5% to 25% by weight of the total composition. Further, the ratio of alkylbenzene sulphonate to alkoxysulphate (preferably ethoxysulphate) salt of an alcohol may vary from 10:1 to 1:1 by weight.
The phosphate builder used in the compositions according to the present invention preferably includes sodium tripolyphosphate, also known as pentasodium tripolyphosphate (NasP3010). Various ratios of tripolyphosphate and pyrophosphates can be used. It is also possible to use tripolyphosphate of varying "Phase I" content. The total phosphate level of the composition can be varied from 2.85% to 14.25% (in the case of TPP from 5% to 25%, preferably 10% to 20%), expressed by weight as P2O5. In addition, alkaline substances such as alkali metal carbonates or silicates e.g. sodium carbonate or sodium silicate, may be present, usually in amounts up to 5% by weight.
Various adjuvants, both functional and aesthetic, may be included in the present compositions, such as sodium carboxymethylcellulose, fabric conditioners, colourants, perfumes, bleaches and enzymes.
Compositions in accordance with the present invention are preferably made up by first dispersing or dissolving at least one component of the composition in the form of an alkali metal salt in the liquid vehicle before the optical brightener is added thereto.
Thus water may be placed in a mixing vessel and sodium carboxymethylcellulose or similar material dispersed in it. Sodium carbonate may then be added to the mixing vessel and the mixture is subjected to medium agitation. Following this, pentasodium tripolyphosphate may be added and the mixture subjected to strong agitation.
After allowing a suitable conditioning period, the major portion of any sodium alkylbenzene sulphonate detergent which is being used, may be added to the mixing vessel and the contents may then be mixed in a suitable manner to minimize aeration. The alcohol ethoxysulphate sodium salt may then be premixed with the remainder of any sodium alkylbenzene sulphonate being used (preferably in approximately equal proportions by weight) and may then be added to the mixing vessel.
At this stage the optical brightener(s) or dye(s) or both, are added together with the minor adjuvants such as perfumes, any other dyes or pigments, and the mixture may then be further agitated to adjust the viscosity of the detergent composition to the desired value. It has been found with the optical brightener Tinopal LMS that the manner of addition thereof can affect the viscosity of the detergent composition. If Tinopal LMS is dissolved in the water before the other ingredients the viscosity of the composition is high, but if it is dispersed after some of the alkali metal e.g. sodium salts have been added then the viscosity is low.
With Tinopal TAS it has been found that it is necessary to add this liquid detergent as an aqueous dispersion.
The invention may be put into practice in various ways and two specific embodiments of compositions in accordance with the invention will be described to illustrate the invention with reference to the accompanying examples.
Example 1 The following typical composition was prepared by mixing together the following ingredients according to the following procedure; all proportions being expressed as percentages by weight: Sodium alkylbenzene sulphonate 12% C12-C15 primary alcohol ethoxysulphate sodium salt 3% Sodium tripolyphosphate 15% Sodium carbonate 2.5% Optical brightener 0.5% Minor adjuvants (perfume, colour, Sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose, substantive blueing agents) q.s.
Water to 100% The water was placed in a mixing vessel and the sodium carboxymethylcellulose dispersed in the water.
The sodium carbonate was then added and the mixture subjected to medium agitation. The sodium tripolyphosphate was then added and the mixture subjected to strong agitation.
After a suitable conditioning period, the major proportion of the sodium alkyl benzene sulphonate was added and the contents mixed in a suitable manner to minimize aeration. The sodium salt of the C12-C15 primary alcohol ethoxysulphate was then premixed with the remainder of the sodium alkyl benzene sulphonate (in approximately equal proportions by weight) and the mixture added to the vessel.
The optical brightener, Tinopal LMS, is then added to the mixture with the remaining minor adjuvants, and the mixture agitated to impart the desired pourable viscosity thereto.
Example 2 Example 1 was repeated but the Tinopal LMS was replaced by an aqueous dispersion of Tinopal TAS.
Detergent compositions prepared according to the present invention are stable at low storage temperatures such as 50C, as well as at room and elevated temperatures. Some laboratory samples made according to the above described typical composition have not shown any visible signs of deterioration after more than three years, at ambient temperatures. The compositions are also stable'- on being frozen and thawed.
