Description

SPECIFICATION Cooking Top The present invention reiates to a gas-operated cooking top which may be housed in a work surface which is not very thick, in particular in a standardised surface of a thickness of 3 cm.
The advantage of the invention is thus an increase in available space, which is at present very important in kitchen design. As the cooking top is located at the same height as the adjacent working surfaces, the space below may be used for the installation of domestic appliances (dishwasher, washing machine, refrigerator etc.) whose dimensions are also in most cases standardised and which may not be installed under conventional gas-operated cooking tops which are cumbersome in height, or for an additional drawer, a cutting board, a plate stand etc. immediately beneath the cooking top.
For this purpose, the cooking top of the present invention is essentially characterised in that is is provided with at least one burner whose body comprises a venturi known per se, communicating with an homogenization chamber substantially in the shape of a sphere flattened in the horizontal direction and from the upper wall of which a pipe extends for connecting the burner head with the burner body, each burner being controlled by a tap whose inlet and outlet orifices are located perpendicularly to its control spindle which is disposed vertically.
This design of the burner with a homogenization chamber of this type upstream of the combustion chamber makes a very compact construction possible, in particular if the burner body is made of sheet metal of a thickness of approximately 6/10 to 7/10 mm, or even of aluminium. It is in addition to be noted that the dimensions of this burner may be calculated in such a way that it may be used for all types of gas, and that therefore the cooking top of the invention is suitable for all types of kitchen.
In order to manufacture a sheet metal burner body in accordance with the invention, two metal sheets for forming the two parts of the burner body are cut and separated by the median horizontal plane, and then formed by stamping the lower half of the venturi and the base of the homogenization chamber into the first sheet, and the upper half of the venturi and the top of the said chamber from which the pipe for connection with the burner head extends into the second sheet; the two stamped sheets are assembled by welding along their opposite horizontal edges or even by crimping after possible welding.
According to an advantageous method of manufacture, a burner of this type is obtained from a single suitably cut sheet, which is folded in two after stamping, for example along its transverse lateral sides located on either side of the venturi inlet.
Consequently the burner described above has a considerably reduced height in comparison with the height of conventional pipe burners, in which the air-gas mixture follows an angled path between the outlet of the venturi and the combustion chamber It represents one of the basic elements of a gas-operated cooking top which may be housed in a plate support of the same thickness as a working top-standardised dimension of 3 cm.-and only very slightly higher than this working top.
For this purpose the burner of the invention should be controlled by a special tap whose outlet is not located in the control spindle as in conventional taps but perpendicularly to this spindle, which makes it possible to dispense with the elbow pipe connecting the pipe outlet to the injector.
The burners, their control taps, the distributor supplying the latter with gas and the pipes for conveying gas to the burners are connected together between a base container and a working top in such a way that the cooking top has a thickness which enables it to be housed completely in a standard work top of a thickness of 3 cm.
Thus, the lower container has external bosses for receiving the fixing elements for the burners, and the lugs for fixing the top to the adjacent working tops, and the elements for fixing the gas inlet distributor to the various taps. In addition, the container forms, at the rear side of the top, a recess enabling the flexible gas inlet pipe and its connection to the supply distributor of the taps to be housed. The upper working surface has hollow areas surrounding the apertures through which the burner heads are passed and a peripheral rim for spilt liquid.
A novel feature of the cooking top of the invention is its low height6 mm-whereas, up to now, all working tops of gas cookers had a depth of between 20 and 30 mm.
This essential feature in association with the extra-flat burners and the laterally extending supply taps provides an operational assembly which may be housed in the standardised thickness of kitchen furniture, i.e. 3 cm., and with a reduced projection on the top (8.5 mm).
In addition, the assembly and'maintenance of several taps on the distributor and the base are ensured by a single angle joint which guarantees a perfect alignment of the taps with respect to the control panel and this is achieved in a reduced area.
The present invention enables complete cooking tops to be designed with modular electrically or gas-operated elements, the latter now being interchangeable with the former as a result of the novel structure of the burners and the gas control taps.
A single control panel, made as a prefabricated unit in the factory, is provided for each type of cooking top comprising these modular units, which has the advantage of providing an increased surface area on the working top.
A particular embodiment of a cooking top according to the present invention is described in detail as follows, by way of a non-limiting example, and with reference to the attached drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a partial top view of the said top.
Figs. 2 and 3 are transverse sections on an increased scale of the lines Il-Il and Ill-Ill of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 being a partial sectional view.
Fig. 4 is a lateral elevation, with some components removed, of a burner provided for the said cooking top.
Fig. 5 is a top view corresponding to Fig. 4 with the head and the cover of the burner and the injector support removed.
Fig. 6 is a transverse section following the line VI--VI of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 shows the injector support of Fig. 4, connected to the radial outlet tap which, used in association with the burner, enables a cooking top which may be housed in a minimum height to be obtained.
Fig. 8 illustrates the use of the space beneath the surface of the cooking top of the invention.
Figs. 9 and 10 are diagrammatic top views of two possible cooking top variants comprising gasoperated modular elements of the invention and electrically operated elements.
Figs. 1 to 3 show a modular gas operated element of a cooking top which may be housed in a horizontal working table 1 (figs. 2, 3, 8) 3 cm. in height.
This modular element comprises a base container 2 and an upper working surface 3 between which two burners 4 and their supply taps 5 are positioned, the control buttons 6 for the supply taps being located on a lateral panel 7.
The said modular element, on which a grid 8 rests, only very slightly exceeds the upper surface of the top 1 of the unit (8.5 mm in the embodiment shown in the drawing).
On the rear edge of the cooking element, the container 2 forms a recess 9 for receiving the flexible gas inlet pipe (not shown) and its elbow connection 10 to the supply distributor 11 to the taps 5.
The container 2 has external hollow bosses 12, 13, 14 which respectively receive the bolts for fixing the burners 4, the bolts for fixing a angled support 15 (Fig. 2) ensuring the maintenance of several taps 5 on the distributor 11 and on the base 2, and the fixing lugs for fixing the cooking top to the adjacent working surfaces. The support 15 ensures a perfect alignment of the taps 5 with respect to the lateral panel 7.
In addition access stoppers 16 to the burners 4.
for regulating the air inlet are provided in the container 2.
The distributor 11 is also maintained against the base 2 by a block 1 8. It has perforations 1 9 into which the inlet tubes 20 of the taps 5 penetrate.
The working surface 3 has a peripheral rim 21 and hollow bosses of a ring type 22 around each of the flames.
The extra-flat burner 4, shown in Fig. 4, comprises a body 23, having a head 24 with an integrated igniter 25 and a cover 26. The igniter 25 is fixed by clamping between the working surface 3 and the burner head 24. The burner body 23 comprises a venturi 27 of circular section (Fig. 6) whose outlet widens out into a homogenization chamber 28 which is wider but not higher. This chamber 28, thus located upstream of the combustion chamber has the overall shape of a flattened sphere open in the centre of its upper part to form a tube 29 communicating with the head 24.
In the embodiment shown in the drawing, the burner body 23 is constructed from a single sheet folded in two along its transverse edge on the inlet side of the venturi 27; the sheet is thus suitably cut, folded and the finished component is obtained by crimping the lower edge on the upper edge of the opposite lateral edges which may be rectilinear in the area of the venturi. A lug 30 for fixing the burner to the base 2 of the cooking top is provided at the end of the body.
An injector support made of zamak is fitted to the venturi inlet; the gas enters through a tube 32 into the injector mounted at the centre of a ring 33 having two lateral slots 34 and surrounded by the clip 35 of air-gas mixture. The injector support 31 is terminated at its free end by a fixing lug 36.
Figs. 2 and 7 show a control tap 5 whose radial outlet 37 is connected to the tube 32. This tap 5 is in effect essentially characterised in that its outlet 37 is disposed perpendicularly to the vertical control spindle 38 mounted in a head 39 fixed by the screws 40 onto the tap body 41 having double drillings 42, 43 in the horizontal direction for the inlet 20 and for the outlet 37 of the gas. The tap body 41 has a flange 44 for connection to the element 1 5 surrounding the distributor 11.
An example of the use of the space under the cooking top is illustrated in Fig. 8.
The present invention enables cooking tops to be composed of gas-operated modular elements A and electrically operated modular elements B, without the space below the cooking top being reduced as a result of the space occupied by the burners of the elements of the former type. Figs. 9 and 10 show two examples of such combinations, in which the modular elements are disposed together or separately having, in each case, a separate control panel 7, which enables a larger surface of the working top to be made available.
The embodiments of the present invention which have been described above in reference to the attached drawings are given as non-limiting examples, and it is obvious that modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
