Abstract

A tape measure comprises a tape housing 1 incorporating an electronic calculator, a tape exit opening 4, and an internal take-up spindle 2 for the tape which is driven by a motor 5 and provided with an e.g. optical device 10 cooperating with a series of holes in a disk rotated by movement of the tape for sensing the length by which the tape has been extended or further extended. An electrically resettable counter and a display device are associated with the sensing device, the measurement display being on the outside of the housing. <IMAGE>
