Abstract

A bulkhead sealing arrangement for a shaft 10 has an annular housing 20 in two demountable parts 200, 220 one of which is secured to a bulkhead 12 where the shaft passes therethrough. The parts together define an annular cavity 22 the mouth of which opens toward the shaft. An annular sealing element 30 is secured on the shaft to rotate therewith and projects into the annular cavity. The element has a base portion 300 on the shaft from which extends two diverging and deflectable wing portions 304, 306, as seen in a cross-section through the element, that have one or more lips 310-313 for engaging adjacent side surfaces 242, 244 of the annular cavity. The sealing arrangement is for emergency use such that when one side of the bulkhead floods, the water flows past one wing portion to apply pressure engaging the lip or lips of the other wing portion on the adjacent cavity side surface to provide a seal. The sealing element is secured to the shaft by a garter spring 308 seated between the wing portions. <IMAGE>
