Abstract

Optical fibres are aligned, particularly with a light emitting device, such that an optimum amount of the emitted light is received by the fibre. The method employed is to melt a small quantity of low melting point material such as solder or low melting point glass to form a liquid seal, to position the fibre to obtain optimum illumination and then to remove the heat allowing the low melting point material to solidify whilst the fibre is held rigidly in its optimum position. The device formed has a superior performance over prior devices in which epoxy resins are used to secure the fibre.
