Abstract

An animal door for use by cats, small dogs and the like which door provides an improved seal against the penetration of draughts and moisture into premises in which the door may be fitted. The door comprises a frame (2) defining an opening having oppositely inclined and downwardly convergent side edges, the opening preferably being of inverted trapeziform configuration, a planar door member (7) whose shape substantially matches that of said opening, supporting means (13) by which the door member (7) is both turnable about a substantially horizontal axis located adjacent to the top of said opening and upwardly and downwardly movable in a slot (14) in the supporting means (13) relative to the frame (2), an operating flap (16) turnably connected to the supporting means (13) by a pivot (17) and a link (19) pivotally interconnecting the operating flap (16) and the door member (7). When closed, the door member (7) substantially sealingly overlaps a lip (6) of the opening in the frame (2), the door member (7) being lifted into the slot (14) by the link (19), upon pressure against the flap (16) by an entering animal, until the door member (7) has been raised sufficiently far to allow it to turn inwardly through the opening defined in the frame (2). The flap (16) and link (19) may be replaced by an electromagnet arranged to lift a ferrous upper margin of the door member (7) into the slot (14) upon a reed switch or Hall effect device in an operating circuit of the electromagnet being influenced by the proximity of a permanent magnet attached to the collar of a cat or other animal. <IMAGE>
