Abstract

Apparatus feeds a web 23 of metal foil or other dead-fold material, cuts lengths of the web to size and positions the leading edge of a cut sheet 32 of foil in advance of the leading edge 14a of a tray 11 having a peripheral flange lip around its top. The tray 11 is advanced on a continuous conveyor 16 and its leading edge pinches the leading corners 38 of the sheet 32 between the underside of the lip and stationary blocks 36, one on each side of the conveyor 16. Next a plate 47 having an aperture 48 slightly larger than the tray is caused by cranks 44 to move with the tray and also down over the tray, bending the foil downward. in one embodiment, at each corner of the plate aperture 48 is an L-shaped bar 56 which is actuated to move diagonally inward, tucking the foil securely under the tray lip. Actuation of the L-shaped bars may be mechanical, pneumatic or electro- mechanical. In another embodiment, Figures 9 and 10 (not shown), said tucking under of the foil is effected by a blast of air from an aperture tube surrounding the aperture 48. After the foil has been tucked under, the plate 47 is lifted above the tray. A smaller plate 51 may be spring mounted in plate aperture 48 to level the contents of the tray during wrapping of the foil. <IMAGE>
