Abstract

This invention relates to the recovery of data from the security features of a security document. By reference to the position of a coded "sentinel" within the data message the bits chosen to represent the data may be retrieved. By erasably recording the position of the "sentinel" on the document at personalisation, false recovery of the data is avoided. A cash dispenser credit card has a security element in the form of a magnetic tape bonded to the card. The tape before application to the card has a permanent magnetic structure arranged to form code or identity numbers sandwiched between sentinel codes. A length PR of the tape is bonded to the card. The length may contain only one sentinel code. Additional information is recorded on the card in a portion of the card containing erasable data, to indicate the position of the sentinel. <IMAGE>
