Abstract

A process for the flocculation of gelatinous sludge produced by treatment of water or aqueous effluent comprises mixing the sludge with powdered water-insoluble fibrous organic material of particle size not greater than one millimetre in any dimension, and subsequently adding a water-soluble flocculant to the mixture. The preferred organic material is bagacillo dust, which is added to the sludge in the form of an aqueous slurry, and the preferred flocculant is a cationic polyelectrolyte.
