Abstract
Known electrical systems for providing remote indication of the position of a moveable member comprise a transmitter converting the member position into electrical signals and a receiver which moves an indicator in accordance with those signals. In a known type the transmitter comprises a toroidal resistor with taps at 120 DEG and two diametrically opposite brushes which move with the member. The present invention has simpler components and comprises a transmitting device having a planar resistance winding 31 across which a D.C. potential is in applied, a zero potential mid-point tapping 61, and a pair of contacts 43 and 46 rotatable over winding 31 about an axis 35 in accordance with movement of the member and disposed at right angles around that axis, and an indicating device which includes two coils 64 and 65 arranged at right angles and connected between contacts 43 and 46 respectively and the tapping (61) of the transmitting device. A magnetised rotor of the indicating device responds to the resultant magnetic field produced by coils 64 and 65 and carries a pointer to provide an indication of the position of contacts 43 and 46 relative to winding 31 and therefore of the position of the moveable member. <IMAGE>
