Abstract
An addressable matrix consists of an array 9 of addressable elements, e.g. liquid crystal, which are defined by the crossing regions of row 8 and column 10 electrodes. The state of an addressable element, dependent on on the rms potential across the element, is related to the magnitude of electrical signals applied to row and column electrodes and to the number of elements in the matrix. The magnitude of the electric signals is modified according to the number of elements in the matrix which are currently being addressed to be in the ON state, allowing the operating margin between ON and OFF potentials to be maximized. N columns are scanned, being energized in succession while the states of the N elements displayed in each row are prestored and circulated in a register 3 for that row. A count 4 of ON elements in each register, i.e. 1 bits, determines via a circuit 5 the voltage levels for ON and OFF to be applied to the row electrode at 6 according to each bit in the register, operating selector 7 as each column in turn is scanned. <IMAGE>
