Abstract
A blast furnace hearth is lined with layers of carbon bricks 1 with a layer of ceramic bricks 2 forming a top layer. To compensate for mechanical stresses induced as a result of different thermal expansion behaviour of the different types of bricks in the lining when the furnace is heated, there are disposed between ceramic bricks and carbon bricks at a peripheral zone where the hearth and the shaft of the furnace meet intermediate layers 3 formed of a thermally compressible or a thermally softenable material. <IMAGE>
