Abstract

A gas-fired space heater comprises a fuel gas burner assembly (13), a fuel gas inlet (36) to the burner, a supply of combustion air (72) to the burner to generate hot combustion gases, a heat exchanger (15) for directing the combustion gases to a flue gas outlet by way of the heat exchanger and for means (18) for passing space air in heat exchange relationship with the combustion gases to extract heat from these gases. The burner assembly includes an orifice in the gas inlet of preselected restricted size to provide a reduced amount of fuel gas to the burner that is less than that supplied without the restriction and means for restricting flow of combustion gases to the heat exchanger at a rate less than that which would occur without the means for restricting so as to reduce the amount of normal secondary air flowing to the burner so that the reduction of gas input to the burner and reduction of secondary air to the burner reduces the heat loss expelled with the flue gas and raises the efficiency of the space heater by thereby increasing the ratio of heat exchange surface, which is in the illustrated embodiment kept constant, to the heat input to the heater, which in the illustrated embodiment is reduced. <IMAGE>
