Abstract

Each cylinder 10A, 10B of a bank of cylinders that are parallel to and disposed symmetrically about a power shaft 52 a pair of opposed pistons 10a, 10a' with piston rods 48 extending away from each other. Drum cams 86, 88 are provided at opposite ends of the cylinder bank, each cam having a peripheral track 90 cooperating with cam followers 84 connected to adjacent piston rods, the reciprocative movement of which is guided by rods 26. In an embodiment, a fuel-air mixture from a carburetor (38), Fig. 1 (not shown), is admitted to an intake manifold 56 through a reed valve (70), Figs. 7 to 9 (not shown), and is compressed at the back faces of the pistons. The compressed charges are transferred to the space between the pistons from the intake manifold when the pistons move outwardly sufficiently to uncover cylinder intake ports 74. The engine may be a two or four-stroke diesel. <IMAGE>
