Abstract

An automobile transmission assembly comprises a fluid type torque converter 3, a speed change gear assembly 11 having at least three planetary gear units 15, 16, 41 connected with each other to establish four different speed ratios and mounted coaxially with the torque converter to transmit power from the torque converter, a transmission shaft 55 mounted parallel with the axis of the speed change gear assembly, an output gear 53 splined to an output member of a last planetary gear unit of the auxiliary speed gear change assembly at a position between the last planetary gear unit and an intermediate unit planetary gear unit, a driven gear 56 mounted on the transmission shaft and meshed with the output gear, and a differential gear 60 for transmitting to right and left axle shafts 62, 63 the power received from a drive gear 57 mounted on the transmission shaft disposed opposingly to the torque converter. The two planetary gear units 15, 16 provide two reduced speed ratios and direct drive, and the planetary gear unit 41 is an overdrive unit having a planet carrier 45 as the input element. <IMAGE>
