Abstract

Development inhibitor precursors for releasing during development compounds which inhibit undesired development comprise novel precursors of the formula: <IMAGE> where Z completes an optionally substituted phenyl or (optionally fused) heterocyclic (e.g. tetrazole or phenyl tetrazole) ring, R is cyano or (substituted) carbamoyl or -CO-(substituted) aryl, and n is 1-4 (e.g. 1); which may be obtained by a Michael addition reaction between an appropriate aryl or heterocyclic mercaptan and an appropriately substituted olefin. The precursor splits at* in alkaline processing solution, aided by increased temperature, to liberate the Z-S precursor. 8 specific compounds are described. Photographic elements of the invention include the novel precursor associated with a silver halide emulsion layer in a position where the released inhibitor can inhibit development. In colour diffusion transfer material the precursor is preferably in a neutralising cover sheet.
