Abstract

The assembly comprises a spindle shaft (7) with spaced hydrostatic axial- radial bearings having taper surfaces (17, 18) on the shaft (7) and complementary surfaces (13, 15) in a housing (1). A piston (47) in a chamber (61) exerts axial force on the shaft (7) through a wire tension member (53). The piston (47) has portions which differ in respect of their external diameters. The shaft (7) carries a turbine blade wheel (40), and various passages and bores serve for the flow of hydraulic pressure medium to and from the various surfaces and chambers in the housing (1) and a drive block (2) and a support block (5), all enclosed in an outer tube (6). A support cylinder (43) has a transverse bore accommodating a tube piece (46) of elastic material through which the piston (47) extends diametrically, while an axial screw (44) fixes the axial position of the support cylinder (43). The axial load on the shaft (7), derived from the piston (47) is in predetermined dependence upon the pressure of medium supplied to pressure pockets (14 and 16), various throttling inserts (30), (33) being located in the respective passages (29, 32). <IMAGE>
