Abstract

In the underwater laying of a cable 3 Fig. 1 in a trench on the sea bed, a submerged plough 4 advances by means of an internal winch 5 pulling on a previously laid line 1 and is connected to a cable-laying vessel 6 (also Fig. 2 not shown) by line(s) 1, 8 which is or are located above and behind the cable 3 to be laid to avoid tangling. Optionally line 1 may be left in the trench. The plough keel 15, Fig. 7 (alternative plough constructions Figs. 8-12, not shown) passes along the trench, which is cleared by water jets 19, as cable 3 passes through horn 21 into the trench. Keel depth is adjusted by hydraulic rams 14. Control cable 8 is buoyant. Some of the proposals of GB Pat No. 1 466 570 also apply to the present invention. <IMAGE>
