Abstract

Method and apparatus for detecting holes or surface flaws in sheet material such as tinplate 10 moving in the direction of the arrow where a beam from a laser passing through a modulator (not shown) is scanned by a mirror drum 14 across cylindrical mirror 16 and plane mirror 17 to produce a slit shaped beam and the light passing through a hole is received by a bunch of light guides 22 and passed to a photomultiplier 36. Light reflected from the sheet surface strikes semi-diffusing retro-reflector 61 and travels back along a path similar to that of the original beam to second photomultiplier 63 which registers faults on the sheet surface which are characterised by changes in reflectivity. The output of photomultiplier 36 is also used to control the modulator hence the scan. Potential scan errors at the sheet edge are corrected by a half-wave plate (Figures 10, 11). Holes not substantially normal to the plane of the sheet may be detected by a dual- beam scanning arrangement (Figure 6). The position of a flaw can be detected by correlation of its resultant signal with a signal related to the scan. <IMAGE>
