Abstract
To extract silver from anode slimes from electrolytic copper or nickel refining that also contain selenium and/or tellurium, the silver values comprising silver compounds of selenium and/or tellurium are converted to a material containing silver in a form readily leachable in dilute nitric acid, the silver containing material, e.g. silver, silver oxide or carbonate, is leached with dilute nitric acid, and the silver is recovered from the leach solution by electrowinning. To solubilise the silver the slimes may be subjected to a caustic oxidative leach, which may be preceded by an acid pressure leach with sulphuric acid or a sulphation leach with concentrated sulphuric acid to dissolve copper, nickel and tellurium. Alternatively the slimes may be subjected to an acid oxidative pressure leach in sulphuric acid, followed by a caustic addition. Selenium and tellurium present are also recovered in an overall hydrometallurgical process. The residue from the nitric acid leach may be leached in a soluble acetate to extract lead and the residue treated to recover platinum metals and gold.
